Millennial gays: how and where do you meet new gay friends?
I wonder what the prime social conductors are today compared to ours 30-45 years ago. We met at gyms (still a hunting ground), in bars (less abundant and less popular today), at dance clubs, gay meeting spots (like bath houses, bookstores, porn movie theaters, and outdoor venues), cruising on the street (almost unheard of today), at gay resorts while on vacation, and, of course, through introductions by friends.
Today, digital apps seem predominant, though I eagerly await testimony about friendships made via Grindr and its ilk, as well as other sources, from followers.
The feeling I get is that there are few highly trafficked locations or activities where gay men can meet today for something besides sex, other than perhaps gay intramural athletic leagues in some cities. To be fair, if one uses digital apps with an intent other than sexual intercourse, it is possible to meet lasting new friends there without ever frolicking in bed. I have.
All of this is a precursor to reminding viewers that Capturing Rainbows’ member section will soon be open for setting up personal profiles and becoming members in a non-sexual environment, at no cost. Stay tuned for the announcement as well as instructions on how to maximize the social benefits we anticipate will be available: meeting new friends (first online, then maybe in person), connecting with potential informal guides for when you travel to new destinations, business networking, finding mentors, and even possibly dating, all surrounded by captivating first-person moments from our LGBTQ history, available to be digested in story, photo, video, and podcast form.
Today’s photo was taken at David Pollard and @donhaddenindc’s lively, crowded, and steamy backyard pool party during HotLanta in late August 1992. Fortunately, this kind of gathering still happens regularly on global party circuits from Birmingham to Beirut.#35mm
