31 Days of Halloween #15
Slipped in under the radar at the tail end of the 80's slasher craze comes a low budget outting from some of the people who worked on the Evil Dead films.
We get Sam and Ted Raimi in acting roles, along with a cameo from Bruce Campbell, and absolutely outstanding effects from the founding KNB crew. Written and directed by long time Raimi/Campbell and Tarantino pal Scott Spiegel.
While during this period most slasher films were running their course and extremely formulaic. The studios were churning them out for profit and and barely putting in any effort. Intruder however does just enough to stand out among it's peers.
While its low budget nature sometimes stand out a little too much it also becomes it's greatest strength as director Speigel is forced to buck the traditional conventions. The entire film takes place in one location, a supermarket, and luckily the action starts fairly quickly.
We don't waste time with the normal boring slow first act of weaker slasher films. An early incident allows each character to react and show us exactly who these characters are. Director Speigel also gets playful with his camera often placing it in some interesting spots, while never getting as crazy with the movement as his pal Raimi does, it's easy to see how these two came up together as filmmakers.
Ultimately it really comes down to the shockingly gruesome sfx from Kurtzman, Berger, and Nicotero. They push the boundary well beyond what's normally seen in the standard slasher fair, delightfully relishing in the aftermath of the horrific encounters with some supermarket appliances.
Absolutely worth checking out for fans of low budget 80's slasher films.
New #bookreview alert! This one's amaaazing! Kill Creek by Scott Thomas, which was nominated for a Bram Stoker award and won ALA's horror book of the year award back in 2017. 👻
World-renowned horror author Sam McGarver has writer’s block. He hasn’t written anything in two years. So when he’s mysteriously invited to spend Halloween at an allegedly haunted house, he figures he has nothing to lose. When he gets there, he discovers that the reporter who invited him, infamous Wainwright of the website “WrightWire” fame, actually invited three other horror authors as well. All four of them write completely different types of horror, and they’re all brought to the house for an interview and a publicity stunt to increase sales of their future books. But when the sun goes down strange things start to happen in the house, and Sam starts to wonder—what if this house really is haunted?
Kill Creek is not for the faint of heart! That said, I recommend it to everyone. Sure, those of you who scare easily might hate me for it, but I really think this book has something for everyone. It fully encompasses the four appeal elements that I learned about in readers' advisory in library school—plot, character, language, and setting.
