Well, it's almost four years since I shot this magical sky over Edinburgh. Having taken a wee drive through the city last night, I again proclaim Edinburgh is indeed, the greatest city in the world.

{‘I’ve seen wildlife under mounting pressure and it’s not just from human economy or technology but behind every threat is the frightening explosion in human numbers.’}
•
This years @edinburghzoo #GiantLanterns theme is Myths and Legends and I originally expected this to include only creatures from fables and folklore. Whilst this was true for the beginning of our lantern led journey it quickly became apparent that there was a more sinister undertone. As the lanterns change from folklore, to endangered species to extinct animals it became clear that the message the zoo are trying to impart on its visitors is this: If we don’t start conserving these animals they too will become a thing of the past - and over time will only exist as myths and legends. It is currently estimated that there are only 3,890 tigers left in the wild. Let’s not allow them to become legend.

Hello Good people 👋 ! It's time for another exciting trip!☺️ Today we'll take you to the one of the most photographed 📸 fortresses in Scotland!
Let's meet Kilchurn Castle! Built in mid 1400s by Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Lord Of Glenorchy.
Intresting fact is that the tower has identical masonic symbols just like these inside Rosslyn Chapel 😲

July is the perfect season to visit Scotland. The lovely town of Dean Village, is one of my favorite finds, recommended by our Scotch tasting tour guide Pete. Beautiful river full of tiny flowers, with brown stone buildings and such you can only find in fairy tales. Listed as a UNESCO World heritage town. Next time when I come to Edinburgh, will sure stay here a few nights. .

Stereotype pictures of a castle in Scotland...
Maybe one of the most photographed sights of the country... Fortunately this place doesn't loose any of it's mystcal magic with any shot.

The whole scenery is still so amazing and rich on so many different perspectives. You can hang out hours here just looking at the details and taking pictures of this gorgeous place...

T h e R i n g o f B r o d g a r_VI | I wonder who designed and made this beautiful curved boardwalk. It's so respectfully done. Gently hovering over the heather and wild flowers of the wetland, it takes you from the car park at the shores of the Loch of Harray across to the foot of the hill where the mighty Ring of Brodgar has stood guard for 4500 years.

On the path up the slope to the site of the ancient henge monument, the grass has been carefully reinforced, but signs of human intervention are barely visible.

Castle Campbell dates from the early 15th century and was built by John Stewart, Lord of Lorn. In 1465, the castle passed by marriage to Colin Campbell, Earl of Argyll when he married Isobel, eldest daughter of John Stewart. The Campbells had come to prominence following the Wars of Scottish independence.
▫️
Colin Campbell died in 1493 and was succeeded by his son, Archibald. He had been appointed as Chancellor of Scotland in 1483 and, following his father's death, he reflected his status with a wave of upgrades at Castle Campbell. Archibald died alongside James IV at the Battle of Flodden (1513).
▫️
The Campbell's status inevitably saw important visitors come to the castle. In 1556, John Knox preached to a large audience there. The castle also hosted a Royal visit in January 1563 when Mary, Queen of Scots visited to attend the wedding of James Stewart, Lord Doune to Margaret, sister to Archibald, Fifth Earl of Argyll. Two years later Mary was back but this time at the head of an army following Campbell's decision to support the rebels opposing her.
▫️
The execution of Charles I in 1649 created a schism between the English Parliament and Scotland. Archibald Campbell initially supported King Charles II but when English forces invaded and secured a decisive victory at the Battle of Dunbar (1650), he switched sides to support Oliver Cromwell. By December 1653 Castle Campbell was being used to garrison English troops but in Summer 1654 it was attacked by Royalists and gutted by fire.
▫️
Following the Restoration of Charles II, the treasonous Archibald Campbell was promptly executed. His son opted to live in Stirling instead and Castle Campbell was never repaired. It passed into State care in 1948.

Just south of Edinburgh is some of the best #castlehunting ground in southern Scotland.

Crichton Castle is different every time you go. The light, the weather, the birds overhead - they all play beautifully off of this castle nestled above a river valley upon a hill that commands your attention.

Crichton Castle reflects the ambition of the family who built it, the Crichtons, whose members reached the highest echelons of power. William Crichton transformed his father's formidable towerhouse into a luxurious courtyard castle in the mid-15th century, which was itself remade into Renaissance-style masterpiece in the 16th century.
Crichton Castle played a role in the infamous Black Dinner of 1440, when the doomed Douglas brothers stopped here en route to Edinburgh. Perhaps the ignominy of that episode prompted William to build the collegiate church nearby to pray for his soul. Yet no prayers, however fervent or well-funded, can wash away the stain of murder under trust - a crime second only to kinslaying.

Crichton Castle is managed by @historicscotland / @histenvscot and is now closed for the winter. You can still explore the outside, and I particularly recommend going for sunrise/sunset. Nearby you'll find #Crichton Souterrain, an Iron Age subterranean tunnel with stones recycled from a nearby Roman fort, and Borthwick Castle, a solid contender for the title of Scotland's mightiest towerhouse.

The #scottmonument is a Victorian Gothic monument to #scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It is the second largest monument to a writer in the world after the José Martí monument in Havana. It stands in #princessstreetgardens in Edinburgh, opposite the Jenners department store on Princes Street and near Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station, which is named after Scott's Waverley novels.

Falkland Castle was built at some point before the 13th century by Clan MacDuff, Earls of Fife.
▫️
The Earldom of Fife passed to Robert Stewart in 1371. In 1402 he imprisoned King Robert III's eldest son, David, holding him at Falkland Castle in dreadful conditions, leading to his premature death. When Robert’s younger son James, returned to Scotland from France as King James I, he moved against the then owner - Murdoch Stewart - and confiscated Falkland Castle in 1425.
▫️
Between 1453 and 1460 the Crown made significant modifications to the castle to convert it into a Royal residence. Around 1511 James IV commenced a substantial rebuilding of the site to convert it into a Palace.
▫️
In 1537, James V married Madeleine de Valois, daughter of Francis I of France, and Falkland Palace was deemed sufficiently grand to be promised as a 'jointure house', a residence to be allocated to the Queen in the event of her husband's death. This prompted a period of substantial upgrades to the site.
▫️
James V’s daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots spent significant amounts of time at Falkland and clearly favoured it as a residence. So too did her son, James VI, and grandson Charles I.
▫️
The 17th century Civil Wars saw Charles I deposed. Scotland, which had not been consulted in the King's execution, declared support for Charles II prompting English forces to invade. Despite an English victory at Dunbar, Charles II was crowned at Scone in 1651 and thereafter spent a short period in residence at Falkland Palace. However, Charles was defeated in 1651 and spent the next 9 years in exile.
▫️
With its main role as a Royal residence over, the palace went into decline that was only halted by 19th century restoration.
