mehrangarh First in our series of uploads on Jodhpur’s historic water bodies - Gulab Sagar
Jodhpur is well known for its sophisticated network of water bodies which have historically played a crucial role in ensuring its survival.
Gulab Sagar, a water tank at the heart of Jodhpur was one of the main sources of drinking water for its residents even as late as 1955. It was built in 1794 by Gulab Rai, a very powerful paswan of Maharaja Vijai Singh (r. 1752-1793). Paswan was a coveted title bestowed only on the ruler’s most favoured consorts. An inscription on a commemorative pillar at the water tank reflects Gulab Rai’s status; referring to her as “…raj rajeshwar maharajadhiraj shri vijai singh ji ki dharampatni maharani shri 108 shri paswan ji shri gulab rai ji…” Though an important historic monument Gulab Sagar is now neglected and in terrible need of restoration with active community participation.
Do you have pictures of other important water bodies in Jodhpur?

Welcome to the Club.
Santa Rosa is a gold mine of Route 66 relics, and sadly only the sign remains for the historic Club Cafe. It opened in 1935 (or 37, I've seen both dates) and was an instant hit on the Mother Road. The chef was also the owner for many years; he used to sell newspapers outside the restaurant as a young boy. Famous for its sourdough biscuits, blue corn tortillas, and Fat Man mascot, it fell victim to a recession and chain restaurants in the 90s. It was demolished in 2015, and if that doesn't put an ache in your heart then we can't be friends.
These old treasures are disappearing by the day and I hate it. Get out and see what you can.. before the big guys drive everyone out of town. Better yet, choose a local place to stop on your next road trip. You just might save them for the next guy to see.
