I've had Paris's The Devil Made Me Do It on high rotation since it landed on my doorstep about a month ago. The fabulous Netflix documentary series Hip-Hop Evolution introduced me to it, whereby I experienced one of those "Whoa, Oh my god, holy shit, what the fuck is this?" moments. Hardly well known or widely available, I ended up finding a copy at a record store in Perth of all places.
Paris was dubbed the Black Panther of Hip-Hop because of his militant black nationalist style. MTV ended up banning the video for the title track because of its portrayal of police brutality and the inclusion of a very evil looking Uncle Sam character.
The Devil Made Me Do it embodies everything I love about hip-hop. Its postmodern politically-charged cuts fuse jazz, funk and rock and roll them out over sinister rumbling basslines that really slap you out of your stupor. This is music with a message, music with something to say, it's practical poetry, and I'll be dammed if I'll listen to anyone disparage it.
