Visited Okinawa for the first time in connection with the musical HIMEYURI which I appear on next month.
The battle of Okinawa was the only ground battle of World War II fought on the Japanese islands.
I prayed in front of the monuments of the students who went to war and listened to the voice of the waves on the beach where the students committed suicide.
The sea was eloquent.
Himeyuri Peace Museum, Itoman, Okinawa
Highly recommend visit to understand the sacrifice and pain of the war on Okinawan people, particularly the students who were volunteered for the war effort.
Paid a visit to the Himeyuri memorial/museum. The himeyuri was a group of 222 young school girls (ages 15-19) & 18 teachers who were part of a nursing unit during the war. They were sent to the front lines and faced hardship and were caught in the middle of fighting. Some were killed, while other committed suicide. At the end, 123 students and 13 teachers perished. If you’re visiting Okinawa, I also suggest you visit this memorial as well as the prefectural peace museum.
