A Unique Love Story
19 years ago, photographer Miyoko Ihara began taking photos of the extraordinary relationship between her elderly grandmother, Misao, and her tiny kitten, Fukumaru. Over 12 years of memories are captured in the photo book, Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat, documented by her granddaughter. The best seller portrays the extraordinary friendship between the two in their everyday lives - farming the land, cooking, or simply relaxing.
Misao rescued her odd-eyed white cat back in 2003 when she found her abandoned in a shed. Fukumaru, which means "good fortune" and "circle" has heterochromia. Heterochromia, which means different (hetero) colors (chromia), is used to describe the condition where a person or animal have different colored eyes. This condition is popular among certain cat breeds such as the Turkish Van, Turkish angora, Japanese bobtail and Sphynx.
