The art of healing: five medicinal plants used by Aboriginal Australians
People have lived in Australia for at least 65,000 years. In all those generations the land provided original Australians with everything they needed for a healthy life.
At least half the food eaten by the first Australians came from plants, and it was the task of women to collect them. Fruits, seeds and greens were seasonal, but roots could usually be dug up all year round, because the earth acted as a natural storage cupboard.
The particular plants eaten or used as medicine varied in different parts of Australia. In Arnhem Land, North Queensland and the Kimberley, many tropical trees bear fruits and seeds, such as native figs (Ficus spp.), lilly-pillies (Acmena, Eugenia and Syzygium spp.) and macadamia nuts.
In Central Australia, where water is scarce, plants are spread thinly over the land. Here the people relied more on the seeds of native grasses and wattles such as mulga (Acacia aneura), wiry wattle (Acacia coriacea) and even the coolabah tree (Eucalyptus microtheca). In the southern parts of Australia, roots (applying that word to all the underground parts of a plant) were the most important foods.
In terms of medicines, many different parts of plants were used. Native mints (Mentha spp.) were remedies for coughs and colds, while the gum from gum trees, which is rich in tannin, was used for burns. The green plum (Buchanania obovata) is enormously rich in vitamin C.
Here are five other plants that have medicinal uses:
1. Kangaroo apple (Solanum aviculare or Solanum laciniatum)
This is a great example of a food source and medicinal plant for many Victorian Aboriginal clan groups. This shrub varies in height. Its leaves resemble a kangaroo’s paw and it produces purple flowers.
The early fruits that form are at first yellow or green and highly poisonous, but can be eaten when they are at their ripest, turning a blood-orange colour. The fruit contains high levels of the alkaloid solanine, which can be infused from the leaves with hot water to create steroids.

White Mustard Seeds (Bai Jie Zi)
Another common household herb with many benefits beyond cooking for gourmet flavoring. White mustard seeds are helpful to alleviate cough, specifically the type with thin clear sputum/ phlegm that comes up when you cough.
In my TCM class at @wildgingerherbalcenter I ground these into a fine powder, mixing it with powdered tangerine peels and powdered ma huang/ephedra + ginger juice, to form small cakes to use as an isolating substance with moxa cones/moxibustion. This is a warming combination I commonly use harmonize the middle to treat the upper, ie lung / respiratory issues that also presents with bloating, abdominal distention and nausea. Strengthening Earth to support Metal.
No, my plate doesn't always look like this but a recent trip to a local cafe got me thinking.
I was in the mood for a toasted wrap, but they didn't have any more wraps so they offered a salad instead.
I obliged and after spending £8 on a salad and tea, I went home only to realise I had all the ingredients (except sun-dried tomatoes) in the fridge.
Since then, I've been reminded how really easy it is to whip up something beautiful on your plate, with whatever you have.
So that's what I've been doing, it may not be everyday but at the very least 2-3 times a week if things get hectic.
That seems doable right?
The more I eat foods that are 'alive' as opposed to always cooked, the more energy & less lethargic I feel.
Just wish I had this salad bug during the summer, would have really come in handy 😊
Moral of the story - sometimes we go in search of things outside, thinking it may be fancier, but we almost always have what we need, closer than we think.
We just have to be willing to look.
Ingredients I used:
Red cabbage (lightly steamed)
Sun dried tomatoes
Mixed in with hummus, red & green pesto.
What's on your plate today?
Happy selfcare Sunday folks 💜
I love a bargain. I’m not ashamed to admit it. Nothing gets me more excited than a Country Road ‘Spend and Save’ sale and doTERRA’s BOGO week, which is a week of free oils! BOGO week is when you can get 10 essential oils for the price of 5 💃
Being a Naturopath, I’m pretty mad about using plant medicine and basic lifestyle changes to optimise health! After all, we can prevent up to 80% of chronic disease through nutrition and lifestyle changes. doTERRA essential oils are an incredibly effective, safe, holistic tool you can use for yourself and family health to kick start metabolism, regulate blood sugar levels, support mood (including stress and anxiety), combat inflammation, aid digestion and optimise immunity.
Whether you’re a newbie to the land of oils and haven’t gotten started yet, or you’re a full-blown oils junkie, this week is one of the cheapest and exciting ways to replace oils your using, try new ones and get started with Christmas gifts (I’m talking stocking fillers, teacher gifts and those gifts you wrap under the tree for yourself)
Each morning until Friday (23rd), a new BOGO will be released. For example, buy a bottle of Lavender and get a bottle of Lemon for free. I’ll post the daily BOGO here. These offers last for 24 hours or until stocks last (they do sell out!!)
For existing oily lovers, login to your wholesale account:doterra.myvoffice.com
and add that day’s BOGO into your cart and the free oil will automatically be added!
If you’re new to doTERRA and don’t have an account set up yet we can do it immediately so you can get started with BOGO offers! DM me and I’ll hook you up

WOULD YOU USE HRT? 👎👗🤦🏻♀️
During menopause, there is a reduction of oestrogen production by the ovaries. We need a little oestrogen to sustain life, so the adrenal glands take on this job after menopause.
Synthetic oestrogen is often prescribed to relieve menopausal discomfort, such as hot flushes, insomnia, anxiety, low libido etc. HRT is a synthetic oestrogen that binds to oestrogen receptors in the human body, much like natural oestrogen would. ....................................
Did you know oestrogen receptors are actually distributed not only in the female reproductive organs, but also in the heart, brain & blood vessels?
So for this reason, although HRT is designed to reduce menopausal symptoms, due to to its binding of oestrogen receptors,in the heart, brain 🧠 & blood vessels, it has been shown to potentiate cardiovascular disease & neuronal dysfunction, such as stroke! .......................................
Again, this shows a Medicine targeted for one biochemical pathway, detrimentally affecting other biochemical pathways. The prescribing of synthetic medicine to alter only ONE biochemical pathway is a reductionist approach, that has actually been contradicted by various studies over 75 years ago!
The side effects of some of these medicines, actually violate the Hippocratic oath of “First Do No Harm”.
If you suffer with menopausal hot flushing and insomnia, contact me to explore less harmful, natural remedies please 💜

I haven't mentioned this flower before, it's so widely used I kinda just assumed people already know about it 😂
But here she is!
💛 She blooms in a variety of oranges, and yellows until almost white, with different coloured centres and amount of petals.
💛 Delicious to add in soups, stews, salads, drinks or as decoration, young leaves are also eaten
💛 The whole plant CAN be used but isn't very useful, one usually uses the flower, preferably picked on a sunny day when it's at most powerful! It blooms all the way from April to .. until the snow comes, I guess.
💛 Antifungal, antibacterial, slightly astringent, it is used externally in creams, salves, baths and shampoo against dandruff, athlete's foot, wounds, cuts, bruises, insect bites, smallpox and varicose veins. It's quite versatile in its uses!
💛 Internally it's used as tea (or like I did; put it in kombucha), for sore throat, all kinds of infections, cold, inflammation in the stomach and mouth.
It's said to hold the power of the Sun ☀️ and give your self power and confidence a boost!
Check for allergies, don't use when pregnant internally!
🔥The animal agriculture industry is a horrific injustice and not sustainable. -
💡Cows produce more greenhouse gases (18%) than the entire transportation sector including: all of the trucks, trains, boats, and planes in the world combined (13%).
🔥The leading cause of Amazon Rainforest destruction is Cattle ranching, which is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon Rainforest destruction. -
🌿The Amazon rainforest is referred to as the ‘Lungs of the Planet’ because it produces more than 20% of the world’s oxygen. We need to protect the Amazon Rainforest to ensure the long-term survival of the planet. -
🔹We could have fishless oceans by the year 2048.
🐟As many as 2.7 trillion animals are pulled from the ocean each year, and three quarters of the world’s fisheries are exploited or depleted.

How I saved a Woman's thyroid from surgical removal.. .
An Autoimmune thyroid disease treatment success story.. .
. "You are my last resort. If you can't help me I'm going to get my thyroid removed". .
These were some of the first words that came from my beautiful patients mouth when I met her. She has autoimmune thyroid disease and the drugs were no longer working. So over a few months we supplemented with nutrients she was missing, rebalanced her bodily functions with herbs, adjusted her diet a little and addressed some emotional factors with bushflowers. .
Now she not only doesn't have to get her thyroid removed, but she is also off her pharmaceutical medication and reduced down to barely any natural supplements. .
Autoimmune disease does NOT have to be a life sentence. Most of the time it's your body screaming that something is out of balance. You just need to support it to work out the kinks and eventually it will return back to normal. .
Book your appointment below and lets bring your body back into balance so you can get your life back.. www.insideoutnatmed.com.au . (Story shared with permission. P.s. well done to my patient for trusting the process and sticking with it. You are amazing 💖) #thyroid#naturopath

Today was a peak pollution day, marked dark red or “very unhealthy” due to particle matter from the fires up north, but after over a week of staying indoors most of the day I needed to stretch my legs. I decided to make a trip to the local herbalist to see what kind of soothing natural medicines I could get. I came away with a lot of goodies, including Yarrow Flowers, or Achillea Millefolium. It has a long interesting history as a multi use healing plant. I’m planning on making teas, tinctures and salves for the long winter ahead. I really enjoy reading up on plants and plant medicines, and stocking up on this stuff makes me feel proactive.
I’m going to do a mini series of posts on my haul over the next few days.
EATING TO CONCEIVE 🤰🏻🌿⠀
Did you know the 100 (or so) days before conception are a vital time of development for eggs & sperm?⠀
During this time, one thing you should be doing is nourishing your body with foods that will enhance your fertility 🥗 (and avoiding foods that may reduce the quality of your eggs/sperm) 🙅🏻♀️🍩🎂🥧🥂⠀
It's so important to start eating for two before you even conceive - so you can increase your chances of conceiving successfully.⠀
