Was a series of operations undertaken by Norwegian saboteurs during World War II to prevent the German nuclear weapon project from acquiring heavy water (deuterium oxide), which could have been used by the Germans to produce nuclear weapons. In 1934, at Vemork, Norway, Norsk Hydro built the first commercial plant capable of producing heavy water as a byproduct of fertilizer production. It had a capacity of 12 tonnes per year. During World War II, the Allies decided to remove the heavy water supply and destroy the heavy water plant in order to inhibit the Germandevelopment of nuclear weapons. Raids were aimed at the 60 MW Vemork power station at the Rjukan waterfall in Telemark, Norway.
Re-establishing WEST means re-interpreting every piece of surf equipment we have ever used. How do we approach the equipment a West Australian surfer throws into a Land Cruiser to go into the desert for a month? Products to survive a season going overland in Indo? Equipment to handle a winter down south, and products to be proud of in Hawaii? How can we apply the lessons learned in WA waves and the frustrations of remote-location breakages, to bring products to life that are tougher and perform better, can be trusted, for longer?.
We think a lot about boards. About what a specialised ‘+1’ in your quiver looks like -
an ‘anti-all-rounder’ that most surfers crave on certain days, but few saddle up to order or are lucky enough to have in the mix. Would it be one of Shane Dorian’s 25lb, 4-inch-thick 11’3”s? Maybe one of Zac Ogram’s @z_shapes 5’11” south coast tow boards with 5 layers of 6oz glass? Or just a clean 6’9” pintail from one of WA’s south west shapers with a quarter-inch stringer and layered up with S-glass to hopefully snap a few less boards at North Point?..
We don’t know if boards is somewhere we are going to go at WEST, but it sure is fun talking pure heavy water equipment again. What’s your own dream specialty heavy water ‘+1’ if Bill Gates was shouting, and by who?.
WEST. Built for Beatings.
Great time today at Mannahopkin! Had some spots of rain, but plenty more sunshine. Lots of great beer, food & music. Only sampled some of the beers, I really liked Weyerbacher Meaner Squeeze DIPA, Icarus Chewy Doplebock & Oyster Creek HEAVYwater Irish red ale. Fav food was Rete's Empanadas...super fresh & tasty, and several commented they paired well w Meaner Squeeze.

#Repost @physicsfun - Heavy Water: D2O is H2O with every H (regular hydrogen, main isotope nucleus=proton) with a D (rare isotope hydrogen nucleus=proton+neutron). So D, deuterium, has close to twice the mass of hydrogen. Each vial has exactly 10 grams of each liquid- note there is less D2O because it has more neutrons which makes it 11% more dense than regular water. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #heavywater#deuterium#isotope#nucleus#physics#physicstoy#chemistry#nuclear#science#scienceisawesome - #regrann
