First snow for Whitey. Well, no, he's a 2017 possibly produced at the tail end of 2016, so it's not the first snow for the car, by a wide mile. But its the first snow since I got it! And damn glad I made the choice to go with Subaru on the drive home.
As often happens here in Jersey, especially the mythical land of Central Jersey where I live and work, the precip models were wrong. Like, a lot. We were supposed to get sleet / <1" accumulation. It snowed most of the day and then turned to ice just as the sun ("""sun""") went down, creating a hellscape. I drive 20 highway miles home, and I stopped counting accidents I passed after # 8 today. But Whitey just cruised through the slush, and ice, and snowpack, and salt dumps (!! Unavoidable, the DOT trucks for some reason cough up *clods* of road salt sometimes, I guess if it gets stuck in the hopper they just get out and clear it, fuck everyone else?). Spent ~18 of those miles behind an older Explorer so that was nice, we made good time. Not a moment of slippage. Not one white knuckle.
I grew up here but this is my first AWD car and good christ does it make a world of difference! I mean I'm kinda glad I learned to drive in bad weather on a front wheel drive car since it's so common, odds are I'll have to do it again at some point even if I never own one again and it's a real "feel your way" kind of thing- but this is so much better. Rear wheel drive just needs to stay garaged in the snow, everyone knows it but I always see a few toolbags out there doing a hesitant 24 in the right lane... call an Uber before you hit someone, or at least stay off the highway!
