Maqui berries contain high levels of anthocyanins called delphinindins, which is also found in violas and Concord grapes. But in Maqui berry, these compounds are found in unusually high amounts. The delphinidins demonstrate potent anti-inflammatory activity. These pigments also inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells. The anthocyanins exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory activity, and do it as well as drugs for the same purposes, without negative effects. Claude Gay documented in 1884 in his “Physical Atlas of History and Politics of Chile “ that the natives used Maqui to prepare chichi which purportedly contributed unusual strength and stamina for warriors. By speculation, the Mapuche Indians used berry leaves, stems, fruit and wine medicinally over generations. #hangovercure
