I have eaten many meals now from his bowl made by @robinwoodcraft, and given it many washes. I am grateful every time. I have also learned a lot from trying to reproduce the shape and details. Every bowl is a chance to improve technique. Design grows out of process. The shape of the tools, the size of the blank, the consistency of the hatchet work, the idiosyncracies of the wood…they all have their own effect. Details and ornament fit (and look) right when they are born of the whole process. I want less to duplicate the bowl than to understand why it’s beautiful. For example, take the ridge at the bottom of the photo and the tiny indentation around the rim. I started by trying to shape them with the rest of the bowl exterior. Then I realized that they both happen naturally only after flipping the bowl and starting on the inside. The ridge takes shape as the final step of blending the decreased rim diameter with the rest of the exterior. The line that defines the bottom of the delicately rounded rim is a final cut with a small hook. The marks define and clarify boundaries and proportion. Good ornament marks the object with the life of the craftsperson. (Ornament used to suggest the process of “equipping,” as in “a good craftsman will be ornamented with good tools.” It comes from an Indo-European root, ar, meaning “to fit together,” as in art, harmony, order, arithmetic, reason, ratio, etc. Jim Tolpin’s By Hand and Eye explains how ornament typically follows rules of whole-number relationships: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/3, 3/5etc.) #handturned#vikinglathe#woodturning#handprintpress#kikodenzer#beeswax#allinadayswork#honestwork#earthfriendly#primitivetechnology#woodenspoons#sloyd#woodcarving#greenwoodworking#woodenkitchenutensil#woodfeelsgood#gomakesomething#handwerk#craftwerk#sloydfun#slöjd#knifework
3 days to go for the Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market and these Christmas Trees are one of my favourite things to turn at this time of year. Come and say 👋 and see the newly created forest 😀. #handturned#oneoff#madeindevon#woodturned
It’s been a busy couple of months I haven’t been able to turn any new brushes for a while but I do still have some that haven’t been posted to Etsy yet those should be up soon.
The tap handles above are the last project I worked on and it was harder than learning how to turn brushes. I made those custom tap handles for a wedding. I didn’t have much time and had a lot of complications but I got them done in 2 days and just before the wedding. #customtaphandles#resintaphandles#handturned#handmade#kingshave
