Add wildlife to your gift list this holiday season!
Give the gift of a second chance at life in the wild for the many sick and injured patients receiving treatment and care at TWC. By donating funds you can help provide specialized food for patients like this injured merlin (a type of falcon), who is being hand-fed until she has the strength eat on her own. Or consider purchasing a gift yourself, like bags of frozen lake smelt for injured water birds or surgical equipment that is urgently needed. Help this merlin recover after hitting a window, along with so many other wild patients – like a trumpeter swan caught in fishing line and Virginia opossums suffering from frostbite – by visiting our wish list found in the link in our profile. Initial steps of operation Oberyn-Treadmill-Commander using shaping and hand feeding :)
Shaping: reinforcing closer approximations of what we want the behavior to look like at the end.
We want Oberyn to be able to run on the treadmill when outside is awful and gross, we are sick, or too busy. However, he is scared of the treadmill at the moment so we are reinforcing small steps at a time by offering food if he approaches the treadmill. After he has done that a few times, we are offering food for getting even one or both front paws on the treadmill. Next we aim for all four paws on treadmill (actually standing on it). He offered to sit or stand, either is fine. That’s a big step for him and since he is so scared of the machine we will practice that for a while taking turns between hubs and I so he gets comfortable for when we turn on the sounds (it’s a loud machine and that’ll likely scare him off)
Thanks for the push, @julieslowiakphd ! I had been wanted to do this for a while but procrastinated it until you shared your video. Then I realized I can now get started on the initial steps at least, since it may take him a little while 🤗
I went to the Wolong China Giant Panda Garden today to do some volunteering! They breed and raise panda’s here to release them back into the wild. I literally got to hug and hand feed panda’s, it was amazing. More pics in one of my next posts so stay tuned! 🐼🌿
