Weekends are for shopping! Anyone in Melbourne the new Chadstone Shopping Centre is a must do! It’s the first grid shell glass roof in Australia and the largest shopping Centre in the Southern Hemisphere. The catenary steel grid shell is 31 meters high, and spans 42 metres across 7000 square metres! An architectural and engineering feat. The talented team behind the design were Atelier One from London, Callison RTKL and local architecture group The Buchan Group and constructed by German company Seele. Well worth checking it out!
Interior view of the previous post. Sparkie fixing uplights to interior CHS structure of the riverside facade and connecting the big circular fittings that will both gently uplight the #gridshell as well as provide downlight in the #greathall . Generally find most spaces are overlit with 4000K efficient but stark almost blue LED. @archwksp with @ecubedservices have kept the light down the warmer end in the 3000K range and design intent is not to provide constant lux levels every where. #notafraid of a little #darkness . #candlelight is good!

Professor Julian Vincent has observed that “in biology materials are expensive and shape is cheap” by which he means that natural forms often demonstrate remarkable resource efficiency by putting the materials in the right place.
Common examples in nature of using shape to create robust structures with a minimum of materials would include corrugated forms, shells and ribbed leafs are good examples.
This Education Building for Wood Green Animal Shelter uses a timber grid-shell in a self-spanning form that can achieve a factor 15 saving in timber compared to more conventional approaches. #biomimicry#sustainabledesign#resourceefficiency#gridshell
