This is the 'cerro rico' (=rich mountain) in Potosí / Bolivia.
The mountain used to be full of silver, hence the name. But the Spanish took all that silver and shipped it to Europe. They couldn't keep it all because our (Dutch) hero stole the silver fleet according to a song we still sing.
Nowadays the various mines produce mainly zinc. You can visit those mines and see how the mine workers chew coca leaves, drink alcohol and use high explosives.
But after blasting away for 400 years in all those mines with no maps of the tunnels and nobody knowing where everybody in the mountain is blasting away another part, I wouldn't be surprised if one day the whole mountain collapses.
Have you ever used alcohol and explosives at the same time? On new years eve for example?
