#sewphotohop#fittingsos 🚨could perhaps have also gone under What Were You Thinking...I got this drop-dead awesome vintage Betsey Johnson pattern (last Pic) from @sunnystitcher as part of the #greatbigpatternswap . It’s basically the dress I’ve always dreamed of, but guess what that empire line does NOT like my non-petite bosoms...I did an FBA and got it so that the fabric *sort of* fitted, but couldn’t for the life of me get the easing right which left me with these somewhat ugly wavy princess seams. This was a toile which sadly never reached completion. I love the pattern and I don’t think we’re done yet - I just need a LOONG break before I have another go! #sewist#beginnersewist#sewingvintage
Just back from the most perfect holiday in Scotland. Couldn’t resist making a little capsule wardrobe for the first week.
I wanted separates so I could mix and match, I made two pairs of @sewoveritlondon Ultimate Culottes one pair cropped for shorts, the second I lengthened a little to just above ankles, then @sewoveritlondon Penny Skirt hack with pockets. I also made a bodice that zips up the back as wanted to have the option for making a fake pinafore and jumpsuits. I did this by hacking New Look 6749 a pattern kindly given to me by @elenasews as part of #greatbigpatternswap , I used the bodice from view C and just lengthened it a little. I love the fabric which I bought from @ohsewcraftyltd and even enjoyed pattern matching! I choose to do French seams as the fabric did fray quite a lot and I didn’t want to have to line anything but the bodice.
The second week I spent in waterproof trousers Aran jumper and wellies for long lazy days on the beach, waking and wild camping....apologies in advance for the flurry of photos I may have to post of this beautiful county.....now when can I go back?! 🏴💙🥃 #isew#sewersofinstagram#sewistsofinstagram#sewoverit#soishowoff#soiultimateculottes#soipennydress#soipennyskirt#icanhackit#patternhack#handmadewardrobe#capsulewardrobe#ilovescotland#plaid#ilovetartan#outlander#scotland#from_the_museum_sews
FINALLY finished this bag after being interrupted with summer and back to school! Pattern courtesy of @ohmichellef as part of the #greatbigpatternswap . Thanks so much @ohmichellef for the pattern and @cbready for the lining canvas! Llama canvas is from @birchfabrics and vinyl accents leftover from my chair recovering bought at @joann_stores. I'm so excited to have a new tote to take to all my girl scout events this Fall!!
It arrived! #greatbigpatternswap pattern all the way from the UK 🇬🇧 thank you so much @delightfullupeculiar - I really love dress views A 😍 there's a cute lama clip too, didn't notice until after the picture 😅
A lovely friend generously gave me MANY dress patterns which belonged to her grandmother. I would like to pass these on to those who will make them (i have ones very similar so i know i won't use them). Please see the list below. If you would like one just comment. Due to cost, am only able to send within the UK only (sorry). All vintage patterns have been cut.

On this really Bad day(had an dentist appointment)I get my second pattern from the #greatbigpatternswap#greatbigpatternswap2018 .It comes from Kathleen @redwhiteknits from Canada.I totally love this old Burda Pattern and its one of my next three Projects.Thank you so much for sending me that Gem
Day 3 #sewphotohop separates or all in one - definitely dresses 👗 I just finished my new #stellahoodie dress hack from @tillybuttons and I love it 😊 I used a cozy and soft sweater fabric from @stoffstil the pattern was part of #greatbigpatternswap challenge thanks again to @alsy_d for sending me the pattern ☀️#sewingstella
#sewphotohop day 2! This is the project I'm working on right now - a Knipmode jacket in a wool blend from the lovely @fabricsgalorelondon (see my grid for more details!). Have thread traced and cut out the sleeve pieces so far and working on the side panel.
I have to also admit to have several other WIPs... I get excited by new projects too easily 🙄 the 3 that I'm hoping to finish this month are a top for my mum (with a deadline of the 21st as I'm taking her to Glasgow for her birthday!), a pair of full length Winslow culottes that just need hemming and my #greatbigpatternswap Burda slacks style trousers that came out a little large. I took them in round the waist so they fit but now the wide leg is even more exaggerated so I need to see whether I can slim them down a little 😅
I thought I would do a candid selfie for my #sewphotohop2018 introduction. This is a #wip for my @simplicity_creative_group #s1108 that I got in the #greatbigpatternswap from @rebeccas_stitches . I'm leaving on a long a business business trip tomorrow and unfortunately don't have time to finish it nor take better photos. ...
Anywho -- I'm Katy and I've been sewing for not quite two years. The #sewphotohop was actually the first photo challenge that I participated in within the #sewingcommunity . By day, I'm a graduate student. Since I'm nearing the end of my PhD(!), I don't have as much time for sewing, and won't be posting much this month. In fact, I leave tomorrow on a 10 day trip to interview for post doc positions (aka jobs). But I'll be following everyone in my feed and sewing with you all vicariously!!
This is the July round up post I meant to do at the end of July. Now it’s almost the end of August, oops. Sometimes I put things off so that I can do them perfectly. Case in point: I wanted to write a July blog post to go with this but I never got to the blog so it is still sitting in drafts. So I’m just posting it. Actually some if the things were August, never mind! .
Sewed and altered some things, took my favourite dress to Wimbledon, took part in the #greatbigpatternswap and visited the Orla Kiely exhibition.
I got this awesome pattern from @sewwendydarling with the post yesterday. It comes from the wonderful #greatbigpatternswap#greatbigpatternswap2018 .What I really most like about this wonderful present is that it comes from Dorset,UK ,one of the places I like to travel in the next year .Thank you so much Wendy for the pattern, the card and your Words
Sewing people are the best!! Thanks so much @aubergine_kenobi , so many treats!! I 💖 it
It really took a while to get here but it’s going to become a reality sooner or later. Thanks 🙏🏼 #greatbigpatternswap
Gaynor @hodderandsaundersbespoke is an inspiring tailor and dressmaker...love her feed... but she is also very kind as she sent me this pattern as part of #greatbigpatternswap . I really enjoyed making and following in her mum's footsteps as she had made it for Gaynor when she was young. I've used some green linen and I am planning matching #landerpants . It is a touch big on the shoulders, but totally wearable. I'm too late for the challenge, but I definitely feel I won with the two patterns I was sent. Great community swap organised by @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace. #makeitsewcial#sewingcommunity#patternswap
My first ever coat!!! ❤️ This coat pattern was gifted to me as part of the #greatbigpatternswap from @heart.pleat (thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!)
I purchased the wool fabric (90% wool and 10% nylon) from @drapersfabrics as one of their remnants. The quality is amazing, and Id been searching everywhere for coating in this colour.
I cut a large, which is what I measured at, and it is perfectly oversized. I'm really loving the large dramatic collar, and the curved lines. I feel very glamourous wearing it. Lining is a satin (in champagne) from @spotlightstores and I found these beautiful buttons at a small craft store. The pattern only calls for one button, but I added a second for extra closure and because they were a touch smaller than I would've liked.
I also took the effort to do my first bound button holes. They're far from perfect (if you followed my stories, you would've seen a close up), but they are such a beautiful way to finish buttonholes, I'm glad I took the time.
Pattern is #b6423
#colettedahlia For belated #greatbigpatternswap Not in time. But I think it's looking pretty nice. Did a couple of adjustments especially the neckline and the shoulders. And the last pic shows how it looks on me. Are there people out there struggling with the bodice fit for this pattern?? Oh. This is my first invisible side zipper! 😍😍😍 #colettepatterns
Started my wonderful #greatbigpatternswap from @wendy_stitch but it's a little hardcore for me with these slippy fabrics so I haven't finished in time. Going to take a break with something super simple on the overlocker and come back to it!
I failed to meet the #greatbigpatternswap deadline yesterday. I could have rushed to finish this dress, but it wouldn't have the result it deserves. It was a fabulous challenge to take part in, but doing it in the middle of moving and all the other juggling meant I had to leave my sewing to the end date. So, this frock will now be finished at my leisure. I hope @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot run it again next year as it's a great sewing thing to take part in.
Entry number two for the #greatbigpatternswap I made up view D of #newlook6422 which was kindly sent to me by @cheezysheep. Thanks to @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace for hosting the challenge. This cute little baby set is going to be a gift.
I didn't manage to get this dress finished before the deadline for the #greatbigpatternswap competition, but wanted to share a pic anyway. It was a much more involved make than I anticipated with having to add 6" to the bodice and skirt, then squeezing it out of not enough fabric (had to cut the sleeves in 2 parts), adding a lining and pockets. Still have the belt to make and hem to finish, but getting there.
It's here! In the end, my sole entry for the #greatbigpatternswap is my #burdastyle6836 skirt (pics 1-3). I used a 1m piece from the remnant bin at #fabworksmillshop (it's their denim melange bouclé if you want to find it online!), plus some adorable vintage heart-button print cotton I picked up from last year's #sewupnorth -- the navy wound up working nicely with the right-side of the cotton bouclé! Still tempted to add some velvet ribbon just above the hem.
I still need to tweak the fit (and possibly add some pockets), but I can see this becoming a TNT pattern. many thanks to @what_abbie_made!
Sadly my second piece (pics 4-6) stalled and was left unfinished in the wake of this month's chaos -- it's the #butterick6164 with darts at the neckline, which I received from @lauralee_loves_.
These particular fabrics (cotton lawn from @johnlewisretail, voile from @minervacrafts, and grey chambray from @clothspot) have been in my stash for ages and were originally
for the #vogue8764 dress I gifted to @sarahjmallen, but the fit on that dress was completely wrong for me.
My mock-up bodice in old curtain lining was fine, so I'm hopeful that the finished dress will be lovely when I finally get the chance!
I was lucky to get some other patterns which I've just not had the time or opportunity to make, but I'm looking forward to making these too!
Manu thanks to @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace for organising 💖
Finished my entry for the #greatbigpatternswap just in the nick of time! I made #b6094 , sent to me by the lovely @laurenannesews. I love the button detail on the back, plus #ithaspockets which I added (with french seams, I'm getting fancy!) Thanks for the challenge @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace
And this is the one that I haven't had time to make. I couldn't decide which fabric and I've just been far too busy. I will make it and I'll give it the time it deserves and not rush it. Thankyou @sewcialitea for the pattern. I'll post as soon as I get it made #greatbigpatternswap
My third and final make from the #greatbigpatternswap . This pattern was gifted to me by @piggy_scrumptious . I love this pattern(I love dresses!!😍) and I hope you like my versions of it. The lighter blue one has a three quarter circle skirt, the bodice is as per the pattern, except I added boning to the side seams and lined it. The darker blue has a notched neckline, adjustable skinny straps, a full gathered skirt, this also has boning in the bodice side seams to give it more structure and it's fully lined. I will definitely be making more of these cos...dresses!! Thank you again @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot. I'm not as miserable as I look in my pic, I'm just very tired honestly #sewersofinstagram#dressmakersofinstagram#sewistsofinstagram#dressmaker#sewist#imakemydresses#sewingismyhappyplace#sewingisfun#ilovesewing
5th entry for the #greatbigpatternswap hosted by @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot. Just in time! I’ve been putting this one off after reading some pattern reviews, they weren’t very complimentary about the pattern and made it seem far more daunting than it actually was! It was actually super quick and easy to make. The only thing I don’t like (though it’s not a big deal) is an exposed seam on the collar. I didn’t manage to find a zipper, so made it without one. I plan to pin it together with a cute broach, or I’ll sew some snaps on to it. Fabric is a lovely thick jersey that I had in my stash. Pattern is the @simplesewuk Slouchy Gilet, gifted to me by @sewn_on_the_tyne. #memade#imakemyownclothes#handmadewardrobe#scbsews
My selfies are terrible but I have no time to faff about taking loads of pics. This is my second make from the #greatbigpatternswap . Thanks to @didyoumakeityourself for the pattern and also the lovely handmade cable tidy, so thoughtful and kind. I wanted an oversize shirt with big sleeves and cuffs and that's exactly what I got. I made the cuffs a little deeper, other than that, no changes were made. I want to make another but I'll make it a bit longer. The fabric came from @poundfabrics and it was slippery, the collar took three attempts and it's still not perfect - nowhere near in fact!. Thank you again @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot, it's been fun. #sewersofinstagram#dressmakersofinstagram#sewistsofinstagram#ilovesewing#sewingisfun#sewingismyhappyplace
Finally completed the first of my #greatbigpatternswap ! By no means perfect but proud to have finished it with all its little 'quirks'. And yes that is a self satisfied smirk at having completed something i love. Great for walking the dog windswept hair and all.
I've never sewn anything with a collar or pockets so I'm signing it up as a learning curve. Besides hopefully not making the same mistakes twice, I think if I made it again I'd want to use a slightly heavier fabric and maybe have 3-4 button loops down the front as it does tend to swing open at the bottom. This fabric is from @minervacrafts
I made it roomier than necessary so I can wear it with a thick sweater underneath during the late autumn as it's just a fun pattern to wear all the time.
Thank you to @charlotobot for sending me the #lisette2209 I love it!
And a big thank you to @the.polka.dot.palace & @thezipperfoot for creating the swap. 💟👍☔🍁
Here's my make for the #greatbigpatternswap I needed a short jacket for early Autumn and this is just the job, Thanks to @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace for organising it has been fun and certainly focussed my mind when my pattern arrived last weekend and I realised I just had one week of evenings to make the jacket😂 but it worked! It's been great to see how widespread the sewing community is😎
My 4th entry to the #greatbigpatternswap hosted by @thezipperfoot and @the.polka.dot.palace. This Sophia top and skirt pattern was kindly sent to me by @fromwheredonewhat. I love how it turned out, but I absolutely hated making it! I fell in love with the fabric, but it was the biggest nightmare to sew with! I don’t know what it is, but it’s super slippery and stretched and frayed like crazy on the bias. It does have a beautiful drape though. Can’t wait for an occasion to wear it now 😃 #memade#imakemyownclothes#scbsews
Don't think I'm able to complete it in time for #greatbigpatternswap but this is my progress tonight in 4hours due to some mistakes. #colettedahlia left with neckline gathering and the side seam to finish! :) thank you @doobis71 For this pattern again!
Right up to the deadline! Here is my entry for #greatbigpatternswap . Thanks to @muddle_and_grace for the pattern (New Look 6774), I've learned masses making it. This is my first version, made from an old duvet cover and I'll be making it again in something a little more fancy. Thanks to @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot for a great challenge, I've been so inspired by everyone's makes.
My second entry for #greatbigpatternswap is this cuckoo bananas #stoffundstil Hoodie, which was a total blast to sew! I’m calling this a “wearable muslin” 🤣 and definitely looking forward to sewing this pattern again in a more sedate fabric 😬
#greatbigpatternswap is sadly ending today; it's been so amazing seeing everyone join in with the challenge and how much so many people have gained from it, from trying new techniques to making new sewing friends to finally managing to get a long sought after pattern. I'd been wanting the Butterick #B6318 for so long so I was so happy when I managed to nab it! Here's my first version, it's very much a toile, I don't think I'll actually wear this out, I feel like a reject from Katy Perry's video for California Gurls 😂 but I love the shape, although I think I need to go down a size on the bodice because it's reeeeaaallly roomy! Can't wait for tomorrow when Emma @thezipperfoot and I will be drawing the winners!!!! #sewingchallenge#finalday#itsthefinalcountdown#sewingtogether#sewingcommunity#sewistsunite#wesew#butterick#butterickpatterns @mccallpatterncompany @simplicity_creative_group
My entry for the #greatbigpatternswap 💕💕💕💕 I made this slip dress from a @primamag pattern and fabric from the wonderful @1stforfabrics . I lengthened the knee length version to make it midi and added a split up each side seam. I had to alter a lot to make it fit including moving darts and lots of taking in at the seams (which then mucked up the facing!) but I got there in then end and I'm super proud of it. Just need the sun to come back so I can wear it☀️. Thank you to @thatssewkat for the pattern and @the.polka.dot.palace and @thezipperfoot for organising this fab event! ✂️✂️✂️ p.s there's a pattern still up for grabs on my Instagram page if anyone would like it!
Nearly complete. One more sleeve, hemming and one button to go!
Sleeves are proving a pain in the rump. Too much fabric in the round was giving me poofy 80s vibes but think I've fixed the one. Will carry on after a late lunch. #greatbigpatternswap 😓👍✂
Here's my finished skirt from the #greatbigpatternswap and is the Kent Skirt by @madetosew that @marythimble sent me.
I'm aware that it's probably not at all to most people's tastes but it's comfortable (really soft material) and I'll happily wear it come autumn and winter. I love the fabric so that's what matters! As you can probably tell I made it from a rug I bought in a charity shop and I kept the rug edge detailing for the hem. I've had the fabric for ages and the Kent skirt pattern seemed ideal for it as it doesn't have darts (it's made up of 7 panels with an eighth at the bottom), and let me keep the bottom hem in one piece.
It isn't perfect: it ideally needs taking in a bit, particularly at the hip curves and waist and while I might take in the waist (after wearing it for a bit first) the other seams are top stitched down and seem like too much work to alter; I can't unsee the error I made cutting out the pattern piece for the bottom panel but adjusting it now looks like it would make it too short to wear; lastly it's such thick material (and possibly some not quite perfect sewing) that it's a little lumpy where the bottom panel joins. If I do decide I can wear it shotter, I can try to adjust the latter two issues at the same time.
Time will tell if the visual issues outweight how snuggly it is to wear!
