#Joycing words to 'Seim anew’ : "playfully trangressive, subversive and complexly disingenuous ...”
the “cynic effect” – a satirical response that creates new awareness by awakening the dulled perception of the reader. Thus, Menippean satire is not merely humour or irony, but humour or irony with a specific intentionality. #tsop#mcluhan#jamesjoyce#pun#probe#aphoristicstyle#grammarian
Grammar is actually a democratic sport, with dynamic rules that are influenced by common usage and are constantly changing.
If you don’t believe me (perhaps you got your knuckles rapped in school when your grammar was ‘wrong’) consider what grammar actually is. Grammar is simply a tool that we use to standardize our languages so that other people can understand what we are saying. Grammar is just a common understanding of how sentences go together, the order in which our words should go, and how we use punctuation. Contrary to popular belief, grammar is constantly changing, just as the words that we use shift over time.
For example, it used to be considered terrible grammar to end a sentence with a preposition; however, now it has become very common. Consider that you are looking for a colleague at your new office. You might ask, “Which department is she in?” Here the preposition is at the end, and it seems quite natural. The ‘proper’ grammar sounds quite awful and formal to our ears: “In which department is she?” Over time, this word order mistake has become so commonplace that ‘no prepositions at the end of a sentence’ is no longer a hard rule.
Can you think of other grammar rules that have changed over time?
A wonderful drawing of "yon" coming out of a far distal bottle by lingthusiasm listener @charmanderlie for #inktober ! Charlie also wrote a great caption based on this moment from Episode 25, about why it would be cool to bring back the English word "yon" : we used to be able to make a distinction between this bottle (close), that bottle (far), and yon bottle (even further). (We also love how yon bottle is lingthusiasm green 💚)
PEOPLE OF GOD!!! I AM A GRADUATE!!! 💃 💃
God saw me through! I remember where God picked me up from, having waited so many years before getting into school, having to start my life quite early, no support, no help from anyone EXCEPT GOD!
My mates were almost already doctors before I even entered school. I gained admission severally, but money no dey to go school.... 😂 😂. In the process, God taught me to cook, to sing and to be strong! I entered school as a hustler, in fact, my course mates call me "non academic student" because I wasn't always around but I will ace my exams... 😂. However, I am leaving school a C. E. O and a man after God's heart!!! I am not ashamed to tell the world that I serve the most high God! God turned my Mourning into Dancing, He gave me double for my trouble, this God has found me worthy of his mercies enough to finish a degree. Thank you Jesus... If you have your degree and your PH.d, congratulations, but I am the latest in town.... ☺ ☺. Mean while, I am still receiving graduation gifts 🙄🙄🙄... You see all the certifications I didn't get on time, I will study to the highest level of certification there is and use the knowledge and finance to help people.
