This week we would like to introduce you to Julius.
Before joining Gonarezhou National Park in 2009, Julius worked for the The Malilangwe Trust first as a scout in 1996 and then as a research technician, assisting university students in data collection. During this time he enjoyed learning about all the flora and fauna in the Parks.
After spending a couple of years away he then returned and started working in Gonarezhou, again assisting university students with their data collection for their research.
Today Julius is in charge of all the local procurement in the Park, a very challenging job! Everything from purchasing Ranger rations to building supplies.
Favourite animal - Lion

People tend to look over Impala on safari, probably because there are so many of them. But when you look closely they are one of the more striking and beautiful animals in the African bush.

Just under 2weeks to go before 4 of our Rangers compete in the Zimbabwe Sky run at Far and Wide covering a distance of 53km!
They have been training hard over the past month and gradually increasing their running distances with help from Thomas (who ran the London marathon) along with their other instructors.
They are looking forward to the adventure of visiting a different part of our beautiful country and representing Gonarezhou National Park.
The Delightful sight from my five stars tent on the African heARTbeat journey with Eartheart, spiritual journeys. The same journey will be repeated next year from sept 28th to oct 13th, 2019. Send me a msg if you want to be added on the mailing list or visit @eartheartafrica on FB
We are so excited to announce our next spiritual journey, African HeARTbeat 2019 - Align with the pulse of Nature Unedited! Traveling the realm of the Heart - in the words of wisdom keeper and respected Lion Shaman Baba Mandaza: “Love and Nature are inseparable”. Consider this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be inspired by Zimbabwe’s radiant people and amazing natural beauty, from the lush rain forest to the fierce and raw wilderness; experience the profound stillness of the African bush, and be expertly guided into close communion with the wise elders of our Earth - the Elephants of Gonarezhou.
Zimbabwe is a relatively unknown but intensely powerful place on Earth, and its nature still pristine and untouched. In Ant Kaschula’s words: “In my long experience guiding around Africa, I will say that Gonarezhou is one of the most wild and untouched places remaining in Africa”. In the presence of such beauty and power, you cannot but be changed forever.
#paintedwolves#wilddogs#painteddogs ...#GogoOlive#knittedanimals#proudlyZimbabwean , travelled to #Britain recently, with Clive Stockil and myself, to attend the #TuskAwards dinner with #PrinceWilliam and #PrincessKate - (wonderful Vets and Field Rangers were recognized, all for #Conservation of #Africanwildlife ), and Gogo #Wilddogs and #Lions were presented as a small gift for little #PrinceLouis , third precious child of their #RoyalHighnesses , The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Plus a groundbreaking conservation thought leadership meeting took place at Buckingham Palace- note our very own Clive Stockil in the photograph! This will be ongoing and hopefully a force for future good! Tiny Gogo Keyrings also went to the inimitable Tusk team as a thank you for all that they do for African wildlife and #communities . — with Clive Stockil. More #proudlyzimbawean news is that Clive wore a "Zimbowtie" by Zimbowties and I wore a #Mabwe#Zebra#Mbizi print creation by Joyce Chimanye of Zuvva - Social Enterprise- so lovely to wear, 100% cool cotton and dramatically, proudly, African! Plus a lovely black and white #beaded#Changana bracelet, made for me by dear Susan Sithole of #Mahenye Village near #gonarezhou ....
Speaking at the dinner event, The Duke said. “Our own survival is reliant on our ability to reverse the terrifying decline in the world’s biodiversity. Modern human society as we know it depends on natural resources to survive and thrive.
“Two years ago at this event, Sir David Attenborough warned that man is losing his own connection with nature. We must act now. The clock is ticking towards a tipping point when the impact of what we are doing will become dangerously irreversible.”
Speaking of the individuals playing a leading part in reversing this decline, The Duke added: “Congratulations to the winners and finalists for their incredible work and achievements. We can only hope to shine a spotlight on a few each year through these awards. But in doing so, we rightly continue to uncover some of the unsung heroes of conservation in Africa.” #dukeofcambridge#davidattenborough#unsungheroes for our #futuregenerations
This week we would like to introduce you to Jestina.
She has been working for Gonarezhou National Park for the past 10years and has been the camp attendant at the Tented Camps in Chipinda Pools since they were built. She takes great pride in looking after them, and it goes to show!
Jestina enjoys meeting all the new visitors to the Park. Having not gone to school, she has learnt to speak english by interacting with the guests staying at the tented camps.
Through her hard work she is able to give her four children the education that she never got, and feels very proud of this.
Favourite animal - She loves them all
Waking up and being surrounded by nature. Perfect weekend. 👌 This also marks the end of #usgroblers camping season for 2018. We had some amazing camping trips this year. Made some new elephant friends, got chased by others. 😬 And we finally saw that leopard this morning. He had come down to the water for a drink. Watched him for 20 minutes, while he played around with 3 kori bustards. We also had a big herd of Buffalo come visit a few hours after. Looking forward to camping season 2019. We already have a few spots marked down, that we need to visit. Between now and then, we will be pretty limited within the park, so will only be doing day trips. Thanks @gonarezhou, you have my heart. ❤️ #gonarezhou#placeofelephants#gonarezhounationalpark#gonarezhouconservationtrust#guyzingonaz @cgrobler37
The highlight of Gonarezhou is situated some 40 kilometers to the South. Here you’ll find the Chilojo Cliffs, a series of huge cliffs towering high above the rest of the park. Down below the Runde river runs right along the cliffs. This important source of water in the river is vital for the wildlife in the park. We were lucky enough that the prettiest campsite of the park with a view on the cliffs was available that night. #zimbabwe#gonarezhou#gonarezhounationalpark#wildlife#chilojocliffs#campsite#campfire#camplife
As we await the first rains in @gonarezhou and the hot dry season comes to an end, we welcome the arrival of several feathery migrants. Of note are these raucous but beautiful Broad Bill Rollers that have just arrived and set up home for the season near the Chipinda Pools Offices!
These inter-African migrants have come just in time for Birdlife’s Big Birding Day later this month (24th November). Why not make a last minute trip down to Gonarezhou for the weekend to do some birding with us…and with any luck you’ll also catch the magic of the first rains!
If you would like to join the Big Birding Day officially, check out @birdlife_sa ,but we welcome any twitchers participating formally (or informally) and look forward to hearing your stories of the special bird sightings in Gonarezhou!
This week we would like to introduce you to two staff members, Kanuka and Jerry.
Kanuka has been a Ranger in Gonarezhou National Park since 2014 and has been Jerry's handler since he arrived in 2015.
They are both currently going through refresher training with @invictusk9 .
Kanuka and Jerry are both extremely hard workers, and enjoy being deployed together in the Park. They make a great team and have a special bond.
Gonarezhou have 3 dogs in the K9 unit and we look forward to sharing more photos and stories from their refresher training. Keep an eye out on our Instagram account @gonarezhou
Favourite animal : elephant
Fun fact : Kanuka and Jerry share the same birthday!
A start to another busy week in Gonarezhou National Park. All staff members that are not currently deployed come together for the Monday morning parade. A chance to discuss the work set out for the coming week.
We would like to take this opportunity to share some information about the formation of the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust.
The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust was formed in March 2017.
An innovative new model for protected area management drawn up between the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA), and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS). Built on the back of a strong relationship developed over 9 years of support by FZS for Gonarezhou, the Trust is directly responsible for management of the Park for a period of 20 years.
The Park is governed by a Board of Trustees, made up in equal numbers by nominees from ZPWMA and FZS. The Trust is responsible for all aspects relating to the management of the Park. 🐘
A key component of the partnership is that the the Park should strive to become more financially self-sustainable during the tenure of the Trust to secure its long-term conservation viability – to that end all income pertaining to the Park will be retained by the Trust and reinvested in its management.

“The world is full of strange behaviour, every man has to be his own saviour, I know I can make on my own if I try, but I’m searching for the great heart to stand me by, underneath the African sky, a great heart to stand me by.... I’m searching for the spirit of the great heart...” - Johnny Clegg 🌅
What an incredible night last night was! We listened to Johnny Clegg live in little Harare town, Zimbabwe 🇿🇼
Such an amazing performer and a night we certainly won’t ever forget! We missed home so much while living in Europe and although it’s not always easy in Zimbabwe, you would never know it - the atmosphere last night was so positive and hopeful! There’s no where else in the world we’d rather be ☀️
We made a video while living in the Netherlands using one of our favorite Johnny Clegg songs ‘Dela’ which he sang to close the show last night, the link is in our bio if you want to have a look ♥️
