The remains of a poached #elephant, a tusk-less skull in the veld at sunrise in #Gonarezhou National Park #Zimbabwe. It’s reprehensible that this kind of thing is still happening in this day and age, the rampant harvesting of finite species for fictitious remedies.

Fire is an integral part of the African savannah ecosystem. However, repeated hot season fires can be very destructive and, in the past, some areas of Gonarezhou National Park were subjected to repeated hot fires, year after year.
Over the last 10 years much progress has been made by actively managing fires to prevent large areas of the Park being burnt annually. This through a combination of establishing firebreaks early in the season, conducting a mosaic of cool burns and actively fighting hot season fires if and when they occur - an arduous task, requiring significant resources.
This past month has been a busy one for the fire teams and we have seen a number of fires threatening to overrun large parts of the Park. The conditions have been exacerbated by very high temperatures and strong winds. Thus far, we have been successful in containing all the fires through the hard work of the many staff members that make up the fire reaction teams - specifically the security, workshop and maintenance staff.

We continue to be on high alert as the hot, dry season progresses and our highly capable staff stand ready to deal with any uncontrolled wild fires that threaten the habitats in the park!

@gonarezhou means ‘place of elephants’. And boy, they are plentiful! You don’t see them often in the daylight, more likely after sunset. Decades of poaching have made them choose their timing wisely. Luckily with the involvement of @frankfurt.zoological.society things are looking much better! This photo of multiple smaller families crossing the Runde was taken at dusk from the Chilojo Cliffs on a magical exploration with @willembakhuysroozeboom. 🐘

Repost @gonarezhou • This baby pangolin was recently spotted with its mother out foraging for ants in the late afternoon in #Gonarezhou National Park, #Zimbabwe. Pangolins are known to carry their young on their backs like this from the time the babies are about one month old. To witness this in the wild is very unusual and special.

Pangolins are endangered, and currently have the dubious distinction of being the world’s most trafficked mammals. The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust has formed a partnership with the @tikkihywoodtrust to rewild pangolins confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade, whilst also gathering vital information about this species that can help us safeguard their future.

Gonarezhou Grass Cutting Project 🐘

As part of our engagement with communities around the Park, Gonarezhou National Park has been running a Grass Cutting Project that was started in 2012. 🐘

The project was initiated as a means of allowing community members to derive some benefit from a key sustainable resource found within the Park. The programme usually runs from July to October, allowing community members from the Chitsa, and now also the Matibi area, to enter the park to harvest thatching grass with logistical support of Gonarezhou. A third of the grass harvested is retained by the Park, but is then directly reinvested back into a community programme.
🐘

A special feature has been the formation of the ‘Tiyeselani Woman’s Group’ – a group made up of 25 disadvantaged woman from the Chitsa community. The grass retained by the Park are donated to the woman, for processing and onward sale to buyers both in and around the Park. The profits made from selling their grass helps these ladies, who are widowers or single mothers, to support their families.
🐘

This year, Gonarezhou will be purchasing processed grass from the Tiyeselani Woman's Group to be used in the thatching of our new Mananga's as well as for several other projects that are ongoing. Through projects like this, Gonarezhou is able to provide some support to communities in these vulnerable areas, creating a link between community programs and ecotourism development.

29 - Chilo has been home for the past few days and I loved it. It was my first time spending a birthday with a bunch of strangers...well they’re friends now ❤️ They sang Happy Birthday, we laughed, shared stories and did a whiskey tasting. I’ll miss the stories and the different accents and of course Matthias’ German jokes (He’s German so he was just making fun of himself)
Will definitely miss the wildlife, clean air, the incredible views and spending time with my dear friend @drimcatchr.
Chilo you’ve been great. Adios, Tchau. Till next time.

This week we would like to introduce you to Clifford.

Clifford joined Gonarezhou National Park as a general hand in 2008.

Read his story to learn why he was so inspired to become a Ranger.

When Clifford was a baby and being carried on his mothers back they were captured by Mozambique Rebels. Pahela, who is Clifford's older brother and a Ranger in Gonarezhou, tracked the the rebels into Park where he was able to rescue Clifford and his Mother.

After this incident Clifford and his mother went to live with Pahlela. However, living over 7km walk away from his school, he struggled to attend classes regularly as it was such a long distance for a young boy to walk. Ultimately he dropped out of school at a young age and became a cattle herder.
Growing up close to Gonarezhou Clifford was inspired by the work the Rangers did and enjoyed seeing the wild animals when he was out herding cattle close to the Park boundary. This is where his desire to work in the bush and protect wildlife started to develop.

Clifford went on to work in Gonarezhou, starting off as general hand assisting Rangers on their deployments. On one of his first deployments he was given the chore of cooking while the Rangers went on patrol.
Whilst he was in the camp preparing breakfast he heard people talking, he went to investigate - soon realising it was two poachers and one had a rifle slung over his shoulder. He was too close... there was no chance to run. Clifford dropped down for cover and watched them. The poachers were following a track about 30meters away from him, luckily they were busy looking for animals at the pan so walked straight past him. Clifford quickly moved positions to a hill close by to get a better view of the direction of their movement. He watched until they were out of sight.

African Skimmers in Gonarezhou National Park - By Dave Duncan
🐘

On 21 June 2017 whilst camping at Chamulavati in Gonarezhou I saw an African Skimmer flying over the Runde River. I messaged the Special Species Sightings group and a few hours later I received a message that another 2 Skimmers had been sighted at Chipinda Pools. 🐘

I followed up on this report and eventually located the Skimmers which were on a sand bar in the middle of the river. On various trips to Chipinda Pools we continued to view these birds.
🐘

I was able to view a female African Skimmer on a clutch of 4 eggs. All the eggs hatched and all the chicks fledged and grew successfully. The family of 6 birds were observed on many occasions although not photographed. Around October 2017 the birds left, probably owing to the Runde River rising and covering their sandbar. The chicks rely on camouflage and stillness to evade detection and in this mode are very difficult to see.
🐘

Almost exactly 1 year later, on 19 August 2018, I spotted a breeding pair on a nearby sandbar at Chipinda Pools Causeway. No eggs visible yet.
🐘

The previous breeding record for this bird goes back to 1984, when a nest was located, also at Chipinda Pools. Potential breeding pairs have also been seen lower down the Runde River, and small flocks are sighted at times at the Masasanya Dam.

Chilo Gorge is a #luxury safari lodge on the edge of the stunning wilderness of Gonarezhou National Park, in South-East #Zimbabwe. They offer guests access to the pristine wilderness of Gonarezhou, with the authentic animal interaction which goes with a park which is rarely visited. #Gonarezhou is a gem amongst African parks, and offers experienced sfarai travellers and increasingly rare ability to explore untouched Africa.
Chilo Gorge Tented Camp is a semi-luxury seasonal tented camp on the banks of the Runde River. This is an 'old Africa' camping experience, with a good standard of comfort, and a great place from which to explore Gonarezhou by vehicle and on foot.

View Through a Baobab... although elephants have certainly done damage to this tree the wire around the trunk will hopefully prevent further bark stripping.
