Three years ago heaven gained a diva that I miss every day!
I’ve dedicated a hike every year since... today this one is for you Jimmy🖤
Thanks @mir.i.am7 for one of the most therapeutic hikes I’ve done in a long time!! #southernutah#gohike#utah#iam1stphorm#hike
There are so many benefits of being outside that have been tangibly and empirically studied and proven. Wilderness experiences are now even being prescribed in certain cutting edge progressive medical practices to treat anxiety, depression, ptsd, among many other ailments. As I typed that last sentence I chuckled to myself though because the healing power of nature shouldn't really he considered cutting edge or 'progressive'--it's simply common sense. We, as creatures of nature, need nature to survive. This doesn't simply mean we rely on the environment for resources (although we do), but also our own natural balance and wellbeing. Next time you're feeling down and out, get up and get outside--and no, this isn't some exclusive pitch of a backcountry experience, just go through OUT the door into the outdoors.
5 years ago I would have said, “sure, let’s hike that alpine trail at 10,000 ft.” Then poured another glass of wine and figured out a way to get out of what so had just signed up to do that next day.🏔
I wanted to do it! I wanted to be in those mountains but what I chose to do every day was getting me further and further from ever experiencing any fun in the mountains.🏔
Many nights I would come home from my teaching job, binge Netflix, over eat the pasta, have all the wine. This masked my depression, loneliness and laziness perfectly. 🏔
Don‘t ask me why but one day I said, “fuck this, dude, you are 40 and what the hell are you doing!?” 🏔
I changed things a little bit at a time. Rode a bike race with some ladies from work. Made a point to bring my lunch to school everyday rather than order from the cafeteria. I determined that wine should be reserved for celebrations, not stressful nights after work. 🏔
Little by little, i had started to forget these habits because the new ones that came to take their place naturally felt more engaging and more like me. 🏔
There is no end in sight and I want it that way. I choose to continue this new lifestyle until my last day. It has been worth it every step of the way. 🏔
My health is NOT too expensive and I refuse to believe that there is a better way to show up every day for myself.
I belong in these mountains because they breathe life into my core. ✌🏻 .
The details of a newly hatched Monarch Butterfly Wing. .
Early morning last Saturday I saw the golden sunlight drying these minutes-old butterfly wings while out on a hike and decided to go abstract- filling the frame with this tiny detail of newly transformed life.
This in turn brightened the mood of the whole rest of my hike 🦋☀️
