A brisk stroll around one of the world’s largest giant sequoia trees. Never before have I felt so humbled in a forest🌲🐻 #treehugger #unhuggable #gentlegiant #giantsequoia #ecotourism @rachelleharvey
Today I was at the Yosemite National Park. The sequoias there are pretty huge 😱I’m 180 cm tall but I felt so small into these biggies 🙈

Second week of my second rotation (OB/GYN) done! Here is a picture of me trying to absorb all the information I am learning.

In just two short weeks I've gotten to do so many things for the first time on actual patients: first assist in deliveries (both C section and vaginal), perform pelvic + speculum exam, breast exam, insert female Foley catheter, IM injections. Held a newborn baby. Took history and provided patient education all in Spanish (!!! Thank you AP Spanish). I am so humbled to my patients that have entrusted me to care for them and have allowed me to take part in some of the most intimate components of their lives.

One of the Sequoias on the Trail of 100 Giants in Long Meadow Grove. The grove showcases monarchs estimated to be up to 1,500 years old. The interior of this trunk has been burned out by fire, yet it thrives. (Swipe left for a perspective of its size.) The Giant Sequoia is truly the most awesome species in the Sierra Nevada ecosystem. As in other living communities, sequoia groves - and the mixed conifer forests that contain them - have evolved with and adapted to natural processes that must continue if the community is to remain healthy. Fire is one of the major processes essential to the health of giant sequoia groves. Low intensity surface fires swept through the big trees approximately every 5 to 15 years. Sequoias rely on fire to release most seeds from their cones, to expose bare mineral soil in which seedlings can take root, to recycle nutrients into the soil, and to open holes in the forest canopy through which sunlight can reach young seedlings. Sequoias also need fire to reduce competition from species such as white fir and Incense cedar, which are shade-tolerant and able to recruit seedlings in heavy litter and duff. Fire suppression has resulted in heavy accumulation of forest litter and the encroachment of thick stands of white fir and incense cedar, both of which compete with sequoias for water and nutrients. A natural fire cycle thins these competing species, and provides suitable conditions for sequoia growth. #mytwoguys #sequoiatree #sequoiatrees #giantsequoia #trailof100giants #longmeadowgrove #giantsequoianationalmonument #sierranevada #backroad_visions #rustlord_unity #enjoylifeoutside #hey_ihadtosnapthat #photo_hitchhiker #californiathroughmylens #visitcalifornia #california_igers ##keepcaliforniagreen #viewsfromcalifornia #californiaadventure #explorecalifornia #californiacolors #californiacaptures #discovercalifornia #myhomeiscalifornia #shotoniphone

Burnt Broken Ancient.
The top of a giant sequoia. The closer I got the more eerie it seemed. Like it was screaming, frozen in time. Though to be honest I’m not sure it’s dead. I hear they’re kinda fireproof and fire helps cones release seeds. There are little saplings around the bases 🤔 •

Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park #mariposagrove#giantsequoia#sequoiadendrongiganteum #mariposagroveyosemite #adamandhildasfallroadtrip2018
DAY TWO- Yosemite! First thing, we hiked Mariposa Grove, a grove of Giant Sequoias(Sequoiadendron giganteum) and the largest Giant Sequoia grove in the park. We first visited the Grizzly Giant, one of the more notable trees in Yosemite. The Grizzly Giant stands 209 feet tall(nearly as tall as the Statue of Liberty, with it’s pedestal) has a diameter at the base of 28 feet, and a circumference of 96 feet. They have barricades up to keep people approximated 10-20 feet away from the trees in more heavily traveled areas. The foot traffic of thousands of visitors each year compacts the soil, damaging the shallow roots of these trees and potentially shortening their incredibly long lives. #sequoia#giantsequoia#sequoiadendrongiganteum#mariposagrove#mariposagroveyosemite#yosemite#adamandhildasfallroadtrip2018

In an age where we're trained to look down at our phones, don't forget to look up. • • •

Fun fact: On Semptember 25th, 1890 @SequoiaNationalPark became America's second national park and our first designed to protect a living organism, the giant sequoia tree. In 1940, Sequoia National Park was merged with its neighbor - the glacially-formed King's Canyon. The two parks have been jointly administrated ever since. Never heard of King's Canyon? Neither had I until a few weeks ago - hopefully the upcoming pictures will encourage you to put it on the top of your hiking list.

The #California #redwoods are insanely beautiful. As we hiked around the park, dusty leaves and the smell of #burning were constant. The changing #climate has increased #wildfires in California, causing poor air quality, falling Ash, and the destruction of thousands of homes. Each year the fires rage slightly bigger and longer, and most are started by people. #climatechange #hiking #outdoors #giantsequoia #smokey #californiawildfires #woods #nature #savetheplanet #ecofriendlyliving #reducereuserecycle #saynotoplastic

Life gets too busy and i oftentimes just don't find the time and energy for this space.
But then tonight i was scrolling through my feed and was suddenly reminded just how much i love all of these little memories i've collected here. So here's to documenting more of our travels, our adventures, but most importantly more of the everydayness ✎.
Might as well start with a 5 year old Stephie wandering amongst 2000 year old giants. How's that for an everyday run-of-the-mill adventure 🙃
.....

The largest tree on this earth (by volume), The General Sherman Tree in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park, California. Although it’s only 2 meters taller (84 meters, a height of a 14-floor building) than The General Grant Tree, it’s massive trunk leaves one speechless. Now at the ripe age of 2200 years, this tree began growing about 100 years after the death of Alexander the Great, and when the city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, this tree was already around 300 years of age. It might still live for another 1000 years. All this makes me feel quite small. #findmypark #giantsequoia #giantforest #sequoianationalforest #generalsherman #california

The 3rd largest tree on this earth (by volume), The General Grant Tree. These pictures reveal nothing about its size. To put it in some kind of scale, the tree is 82 meters tall with maximum diameter of 12 meters. This tree is about 1700 years old, so it still has some 1000+ years ahead itself. #findmypark #giantsequoia #sequoianationalpark #california
