An injury occurs when the external moment is greater than the internal moment. More simply put, when a demand on a tissue is greater than that’s tissue’s capacity, the tissue breaks down (injury).
For example, when an athlete comes down from a header or a layup and rolls their ankle, the injury occurs because the ligaments in the ankle were not able to match the forces going through them at that point in time.
Likewise, if an athlete has not maintained their strength and conditioning program in the off-season, and then the demands on their body spike during pre-season, they are at an increased risk of injury. .
When rehabilitating an injury, it is important to look at the external and internal loads to see what variables can be manipulated. Initially it might be beneficial to decrease the external moments going through the injured tissue in order to promote healing. Once healing has occurred, it is time to increase the tissue’s capability to handle higher loads. Identify which external moments contributed to the initial injury and if those can/should be decreased, and what tissues need to be trained to improve their capacity to handle the demands being placed on them. Both the external and internal moments acting on/within a tissue need to be addressed!
Using ACL injury risk reduction programs as an example, the external moments are manipulated by addressing things like biomechanics during jumping and landing, while the internal moments are improved by increasing attributes such as quad strength, rate of force development, single leg balance, etc. .
Using this simple equation can help focus your rehabilitation and training to ensure your patients/clients/athletes are prepared for the tasks they need to perform..

Scientists have been studying the effects of impact on bone since the 1890s. They have found that bone grows when about 4.2 × your body weight is exerted on them.
No, not by crushing them, but by jumping.
A drop of about 15 inches is enough to grow bone from your hip down, though the impact can be hard on your joints.
Tomorrow I will go over a way to avoid the impact!
Just hitting a Sunday freestyle session, it's so much harder ryming on camera didn't really make sense but finally built up the courage to put something up even though it's shit the good thing about being bad is you can only get better 📈#rap#freestyle#growthmindset#getbetter#shit#ryme #🔥
Saturday, August 18, 2018... 6-sec video of Paul doing spider bench rear deltoid dumbbell flys creating strength in the upper back and shoulders. Continue to do the training everyday, stick to the calorie deficit, persist to very clearly see your vision, keep hitting your aiming points and you will achieve your goals. #fruitcove#julingtoncreek#904#Endure#GetBetter
People know I’m into books so they often make suggestions to me. This one has been STRONGLY suggested more than once recently so I know it’s a sign from the Universe to dig in. 25 years old & has forwards from Oprah & Maya Angelou? Yes please!! #seatofthesoul#garyzukav
Big theme for me lately... Influence is an attractive concept until it demands for you to be held accountable. Not a lot of people respect the price tag of leadership, yet they still want to be seen and be followed.
I don’t think there’s anything scarier, quite honestly.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to lead... just make sure you’re working harder at BEING somebody worth following than BUILDING a following.
Make sense? 👊🏼

I spent most the day sleeping and watching tv and avoiding my work!! but I spent the evening talking to my dad and planning some stuff and it was really nice to spend time with him and get stuff done. I haven’t seen my friends in a while and I’m feeling a little down but hopefully I’ll see some of them tomorrow and it’ll all be better
