BMW’s original #8series - there’s a new one for 2019 - nominally replaced the beloved E24 6-series, but the ambitions of the 8 went far beyond the aging 6er. The Circa-1986 E32 7-series broke new ground for BMW by offering a V12 but also kept it’s lower-end sixes, but the #E31 , which used some of the same components, was to be a supercar; substantially more advanced (and more expensive) than the 6. It debuted at the Frankfurt show in September, 1989.
There were no “low end” variants of the 8 - it debuted as the V12 850i and for the first three years, that was all there was - mated to either a six-speed manual or a more common 4-speed Automatic. The 8 had been cooking for a long time by 1989 - development began in 1981 and making the car production ready and on cost began in 1986. Part of the delay was developing the engine (also developed for the 7-series) and part of it was the sophisticated technology BMW wanted to include - like drive-by-wire throttle, common today but totally new in the eighties.
The 8’s shell was initially lighter and stronger than the old 6, but it was also a big heavy car thanks to the desire to make it more luxurious and also very rigid. It was a true hardtop, which usually means more shakes and rattles - not acceptable in a $90K car, which means reinforcement. The 850i weighed about 4,200 lbs., as much as a Fleetwood Brougham. That muted some of the sporting edge it might have otherwise had, which was often a criticism early on. But it was still a very fast car - just more of a long-distance GT than a sports car.
Across the show floor at Frankfurt in 1989 was Toyota’s 4500GT, a now largely forgotten concept car but a similar high-tech GT. Both were cars of their time.
That September things looked bright - #BMW booked 5,000 order that month - but within 18 months the Japanese asset bubble and the Gulf war had sparked a global recession, which kneecapped sales of high-end Germans like the 8 and the wild JDM sports cars. The initial 850i accounted for fully 2/3rds of E31 production (20,072 of 30,671), with the majority of sales in the first three years. The 8 remained in production, in low volumes, into 1999.
