“Many of the nomadic pastoral herders living in 'gers' on the Mongolian steppe are living a lifestyle very much like their ancestors have for thousands of years. This traditional way of living is threatened by climate change, mining and associated environmental degradation.” Photo and caption by Milou Hofman while on the College’s ‘Modern Mongolia’ program.
Of course, I keep admiring Mongolia in all of my posts , but my admiration certainly includes those people with whom I'd spent these 2 weeks. And I'm 100% sure that if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't had enjoyed our amazing adventure this much :) Friendly, joyful, funny, multilingual, smart&intelligent and amazingly talented!!! Thank you for being you! You're all absolutely awesome!
@meghanboody was working on her PsycheSuperStar series, a fantastical photo narrative about dark love and rescue. She needed a racing scene and was looking for a country with a horse race tradition that stood out, something far from the typical glitzy race track scenario. When she came across the horse races of the Nadaam festival in Mongolia, she knew instantly she had to go there. These much anticipated national races feature young jockeys, often no more that 8 or 9 years old, on wild young horses careening across the steppes. While researching, Meghan found out about the reindeer herders way up north near Siberia. The journey to this remote region quickly took center stage. We look forward to seeing how Meghan incorporates these images into her otherworldly photo novellas. In the meantime, we are excited to share these inspired photographs which stand alone as a tribute to the Mongolian people in their magical world. For more images see link in our bio. This photo of Magsar, a reindeer herder who welcomed Meghan into his family teepee the first night with the West Tsaaten. Meghan was initially worried about sleeping with a family of seven, especially when she woke up to a symphony of snoring in the middle of the night. It turned out it was the reindeer grunting, signaling it was time to be milked. #mongolia
@meghanboody has a great new project out about Mongolia. In this photo, two young jockeys race in the competition for three year old horses at the Nadaam festival in Tsagaannuur. The Nadaam festival is a huge deal in Mongolia. Villagers prepare all year for the race. #horses#jockeys For more images link in our bio.
@meghanboody ‘s Mongolia project now up on our website. This photo is of a Mongolian woman with her son and yak herd. Nomadic families roam the land in search of the tall grass for their animals. #mongolia
