Boulder conglomerate of Upper Siwaliks can be observed in Sidhra and alternate mudstone and sandstone succession can be seen near Nagrota belonging to Nagrota Formation . The Middle Siwaliks rocks are made of multi-storeyed sandstone with cross bedding. Deep diping mudstones are part of Lower Siwaliks . These rocks of Siwalik sub-group are developed along the limbs of a large NNW – SSE striking Surinsar-Mastgarh Anticline . The rocks of Siwaliks sub-group are exposed upto Udhampur. The MBT is somewhere in peerah ..the area of Patnitop and the newly built Chennani-Nashri Tunnel transverse the Muree group of rocks which are of Miocene age . In Ramban along which a local river flows this paves way to low grade metamorphic rock consisting of slate and phyllite of Lesser Himalayas . Punjal traps ( Permian ) form a part of Ramsu Formation . There are some pre-cambrian rocks of crystalline nature consisting of Granite , Schist exposed around Ramsu over which Palaeozoic rocks of Kashmir Tethyn are present ie. Syringothyris Limestone , Fenestella shale and Punjal traps .
The Banihal tunnel transverses the Mesozoic rocks of Kashmir Tethyan . Punjal Thrust above the tunnel is equivalent to MCT ( main central thrust ) . It is the thrust which is responsible for separating thr Tethyan of Kashmir from their underlying basement to form the Kashmir nappe . After passing the Banihal tunnel, one enters into the Bowl shaped valley of Kashmir with Great Himlayas in the NE and Pir-Panjal in the SW .#geology#jammuandkashmir#roadmap
