The cocktail-related holidays are coming at us quick this month! If you haven’t already heard, today is #NationalDaiquiriDay . Since I got into craft cocktails, my perception of the Daiquiri has probably changed more than any other drink. Growing up near New Orleans, I thought a Daiquiri was a bright pink frozen concoction that you ordered in a massive styrofoam cup (sometimes at a drive-thru). All the talk of Daiquiris among serious bartenders confused me, to say the least. Until I discovered the beautiful, delicious simplicity of a true Daiquiri: rum, lime, and sugar. This three-ingredient cocktail is perfect to fuss over and debate the ideal ratio and perfect rum, or to dress up with additional flavors and liqueurs. Not feeling particularly fussy today, I went the latter route with a fresh bunch of cilantro I bought for last night’s dinner and an amazing bottle of @anchoreyes Verde that @young_overholt brought over. My personal favorite rum for a Daiquiri is @bullyboybooze’s White Rum. What’s yours?
Spicy Cilantro Daiquiri
1.5 oz white rum
1/2 oz Ancho Reyes Verde
3/4 oz lime juice
3/4 oz simple syrup
Small handful fresh cilantro
Muddle cilantro and simple syrup in the bottom of a shaker, add remaining ingredients, shake with ice, fine strain into a coupe. Garnish with lime, cilantro, and edible flowers (borage).

Testing out my new garden furniture with the South African Cape Fynbos Gin (Fynbos is a plant, not to be confused with residents of the danish island Fyn which are also called Fynbos 😂).
Anyways the gin is crisp and fruity with subtle perfumed notes and goes well with a bitter tonic and an orange or citrus slice for garnish.
The ceramic garnish receptacles at @otisbk are made by one of my oldest and best friends, @__action__jackson . He is currently attending one of the finest ceramic schools in the world, Central Saint Martins in London. Shouts out to my mans. Bar is open 5pm-12am tonight. Come visit me and @equal_parts .
Who else has #totc fomo? It’s hitting me hard so I plan on doing the only reasonable thing: drinking enough cocktails in the Bay to make me believe I’m actually there. And I’m starting with this boozy wonder on the dreamy @vina_enoteca patio.

1 oz coconut milk
.75 oz cherry + @wildhibiscusco hibiscus syrup*
.75 oz lime juice
.5 oz lemon juice
1 egg white
3 dashes orange blossom water

It feels like just yesterday and the day before we were celebrating Piña Colada and Mojito Day. I guess it's not too surprising that there are a bunch of rum drink celebration days in the middle of summer!
A classic daiquiri is one of the most quintissential cocktails after the Old Fashioned. The blend of spirit, sour and sugar works so well together in its simplicity and makes it a great base for most cocktails. A mojito is a Daiquiri with mint and seltzer water. A Mai Tai is a Daiquiri with curacao and orgeat. Change the spirit from rum to gin and you have a Gimlet and so on.
I've made a variant of my favorite Daiquiri variant, the Hemingway. Rather than the bitterness of grapefruit, I added tartness from fresh passionfruit. Lower the lime and up the sweet to compensate for the acidity and we have the Passionway Daiquiri! Hope you're celebrating Daiquiri Day with your favorite kind of Daiquiri. Cheers!
2 oz White Rum
.5 oz Maraschino Liqueur
.75 oz Passionfruit Juice
.5 oz Lime Juice
.5 oz Simple Syrup
Shake and strain into cocktail glass. Top with shaved ice and garnish with passionfruit and lime
Swap the rum for coconut water and the maraschino liqueur for a barspoon of cherry syrup for a refreshing mocktail version!
