One of the biggest influences in my life when it comes to my creativity is my grandmother on my father’s side, who is a well-known sculptor and painter in South Korea. Throughout my childhood, I would walk the path from her and my grandfather’s home to her isolated art studio, and along this path there was this koi fish pond that I would always be so mesmerized by. Koi fish always reminded me how beautiful and majestic fish can really be, and back then I believed that if dragons existed, they would “evolve” from koi fish. To this day, I still remember vividly my favorite basement smell of her basement-level sculpture studio, where she would let me make my own crude “sculptures,” and the nights where we would spend the night in the ground-level painting studio alongside her huge ceiling length mural of pink flamingos among the grass. Be patient and kind with your elders, and you will learn so much.
