So how did you sleep last night? Hopefully the answer is good...but for the many of you for whom it wasn't, why not?
Woke up tired? Wasn't long enough? Crazy dreams? Disturbed sleep? The reasons go on....
I constantly hear people just accepting poor sleep as a way of life, just a shrug of their shoulders and oh yeah I just don't sleep well (no big deal). Um, actually it is. 
Did you know we heal when we sleep?  Our actively bodies restore and repair while we rest. * Muscles relax
* Tissues grow & repair
* Energy is restored
* Hormones are released
Sleep is more than just sleep, its vital to our health.  And so issues with sleep can have huge impacts on so many other functions in our bodies (I learnt this the hard way, and after a decade of 'not needing sleep', I know get its importance!) I mean why do we sleep more when sick? Our body innately knows it needs sleep to heal.  Same in the everyday.

Sometimes I wake up dreaming about my creamy decaf almond milk cappucino ☕️ ! Hehe that’s quite a mouthful I do get some 👁 rolls! I seek out cafes that use quality almond milk like @thealmondmilkco. But let’s talk coffee for second! ☕️ seems to always be a hot topic of conversation - is it good for me? How many should I have a day? Well, here’s my 0.02: when I first start working with a client they are literally scared I’m going to make them give it up- it’s quite a visceral reaction too... I can feel the anxiety! They’re so relieved when I tell them on my program you’re welcome to one coffee a day. I happen to drink decaf (if you buy from a quality cafe it’s processed sans chemicals), but that’s the choice I make because caffeine gives me heart palpitations. I will say that more than one coffee per day can put your hormones out of whack. And every coffee means another half a liter of 💦 to drink as coffee (as a caffeinated drink) is dehydrating. And usually it’s also taking the place of good old nutrient dense food!  Literally. So my verdict. If you want one have one. Caf. Decaf. Almond. Bulletproof. Whatever makes YOU feel amazing. (Oh just no SOY but that’s for another chat). Enjoy it. But swap out the second for some actual food. That’s a win win I say! This is nuts! A new animal study finds breast tumors communicate with the brain and specifically disrupt neurons that regulate sleep thereby disrupting sleep. Poor sleep is known to suppress the immune system which gives cancer a growth advantage.

Breast cancer tumors were found to dysregulate satiety hormones causing specific sleep-regulating neurons (called hypocretin/orexin neurons) to become dysfunctional leading to disrupted sleep and altered glucose metabolism. High glucose concentrations and poor sleep have been linked to cancer progression and decreased survival independent of other health factors in breast cancer patients. This preliminary finding basically shows that cancer has figured a way to cause disrupted sleep and change hunger/satiety signals.

These tests help to detect changes to the cells of the cervix.

If abnormal cells are found, it does not necessarily mean you have cancer.
The cells are simply indicating that they are changing in a way that could lead to cervical cancer.
This is called cervical dysplasia.

Your doctor may either watch and wait to see if the cells continue to change or do further testing with a colposcopy or a test for Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
.
HPV is a virus that can cause cells on the cervix to become abnormal. In younger individuals, HPV can often be fought off by the body in time completely on its own. This is why watching and waiting is common in those under the age of 30 w/ low grade abnormal PAP results.

If subsequent PAP tests are normal, intervention is not necessary since the body has fought off the virus on its own.
.
In women over the age of 30 or those with high grade abnormal results, the doctor may not wait and rather choose to remove the abnormal cells within a shorter time frame to decrease the risk of cancer.

All of these regular tests, procedures, and interventions are finely tuned to decrease the chances of getting cervical cancer.

2 Tbsp grainy mustard
¼ cup pumpkin seeds

add all ingredients to blender or food processor and pulse until combined; add to salmon and top with sliced jalapeno peppers

First, I want to start by saying that I respect everyone who chooses to go vegan for both health and animal rights purposes. I went vegan for a period of about 3 months when I was younger and maintained a diet that was vegetarian with the occasional helping of fish or chicken for the better part of 3 years.

One thing I learned over that time was that although some people may do very well on a vegan diet, I DID NOT. I felt great at first, but then somewhere between months 1 and 2, I started to feel fatigued and I noticed I just wasn't recovering from exercise the way that I was prior to going vegan. I decided to add in some eggs and some occasional cheese and my energy returned.

I tell you this story, simply to share my own experience. At that point, I had no idea of any potential nutritional deficiencies that I could develop following a vegan diet, because that wasn't really talked about very much in the books that I read.

The carbonation (CO2) in seltzer/sparkling waters turn into carbonic acid, thus increasing the acidity. Liquids with a pH <4 can cause tooth enamel erosion. Loss of enamel can permanently lead to teeth sensitivity, discoloration and loss of tooth structure. “Plain” Sparkling mineral waters (San Pellegrino, Perrier) raise the pH ~5
“Flavored” sparkling waters may list “natural flavors” as an ingredient which may/may not contain citric acid, which further drops the pH. 
If you enjoy sparkling water, drink them with food, which raises the pH in your mouth.

TEETH AND NUTRIENTS - it's a long one! 
I like to explain bodily processes to my patients using analogies as that's how I personally retain information. 
I always explain a tooth is just like a tree. 
Most people think if they brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a super expensive toothbrush then that will prevent tooth decay or gum disease and are shocked when x-rays show a cavity or their gums start bleeding or their teeth become mobile. 
Just like a tree is a living extension of the earth, the tooth is a living extension of your body ( unlike hair and nails which are dead).
Yes, a tree will suffer damage if acid rain falls on it, just like the enamel of a tooth will erode with acid saliva but what makes a tree grow, repair and become hardy against disease? Exactly the same things as a tooth. 
Oxygen, water and Sunlight (vitamin D3) are the most essential nutrients we need to stay alive...... Often we neglect the simple things and try to concentrate on more complex deficiencies. 
I personally feel that the soil is the key to the optimal health of the tree. It provides the tree with minerals and contains a vast amount of bacteria. These bacteria carry out so many important processes which the tree needs to survive and for its immunity against pathogens. This is exactly the same for the tooth. Our digestive system breaks down the foods we eat with the help of our microbiome to provide us with the nutrients we need via our blood system. These nutrients help the tooth repair and provide protection via the immune system. 
Unhealthy soil = unhealthy tree
Unhealthy digestive system = unhealthy teeth

You know when you FORCE something, how it’s harder and not enjoyable and feels super sticky all the time? That’s how fitness was feeling for me lately. I kept thinking if I “do something different” it will smooth it out. It never did. •
I also know fitness isn’t something you do only when it feels good. Sometimes it feels like shit. But you do it anyway because you need it. •
I NEED this. But I also WANT this. I want to feel strong. I want to look muscular. I want to be fit. I want it more than I don’t. And that’s all I need to get started again. •

I had mine with some good healthy fat from the avocado, @traderjoes EBTB sesame seasoning and a little bit of roasted broccoli, a drizzle of balsamic glaze and seriously this was 👌🏽💯. I’m all about that savory brekky and #realfood.

So what exactly is Neurosculpting® and how can you benefit from it? In a nutshell, Neurosculpting® is a mindfulness-based limbic system retraining approach. To be more specific, we'll have to talk about the limbic system and its role in our bodies. So here we go!
.
The limbic system is located in the midbrain. It is made up of the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, and cingulate cortex. Often referred to as the brain’s “panic alarm”, the limbic system is largely responsible for determining your level of safety. It regulates an astounding number of functions,  e.g. learning and storing memories, emotions, sensory perception, stress response, and sexual and motor functions, to name but a few.

The limbic system works in conjunction with our immune and endocrine systems. More importantly, however, the limbic system is closely connected to your autonomic nervous system (ANS) and plays an important role in regulating the fight-flight-freeze response. When faced with a threatening situation, whether emotional or physical in nature, the amygdala prepares your body to “fight”, “flight”, or “freeze”, depending on the context. Once the body is in full-blown survival mode, it secretes various chemicals to increase the heart rate, raise blood pressure, slow down digestion and immune function, release extra glucose for energy, and produce more adrenaline and cortisol.

The limbic system is located in the midbrain. It is made up of the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, and cingulate cortex. Often referred to as the brain’s “panic alarm”, the limbic system is largely responsible for determining your level of safety. It regulates an astounding number of functions,  e.g. learning and storing memories, emotions, sensory perception, stress response, and sexual and motor functions, to name but a few. The limbic system works in conjunction with our immune and endocrine systems. More importantly, however, the limbic system is closely connected to your autonomic nervous system (ANS) and plays an important role in regulating the fight-flight-freeze response. When faced with a threatening situation, whether emotional or physical in nature, the amygdala prepares your body to “fight”, “flight”, or “freeze”, depending on the context. Once the body is in full-blown survival mode, it secretes various chemicals to increase the heart rate, raise blood pressure, slow down digestion and immune function, release extra glucose for energy, and produce more adrenaline and cortisol. . It’s a bitter sweet day here but non the less an awesome day. The night went by so fast and now Jacob has started his 2nd grade school year. Where does the time go? This morning we passed through his kindergarten class from ✌🏽years ago and seeing Jacob walk so independently pass this hallway made my heart a little sad cause it brought back some memories of his first day of kindergarten and I realized he is growing up. Chalked full of chard, carrots and garden tomatoes, a touch of coconut milk helped create this delicious rosè sauce tossed with kamut penne.  Ready in 15 mins from start to nom, nom, it a go to on a busy work night! .
Kamut contains an array of essential vitamins. It provides B vitamins, vitamin E and vitamin A, and is a good source of the B vitamins niacin and thiamin. .
Kamut also contains important minerals like  calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. .

Part of my standard introduction in presentations is to acknowledge my personal bias in healthcare and nutrition. I’ve had some unique and impressionable experiences in my life and career that make my belief in the power of Integrative/Functional Medicine and nutrition very strong... creating a bias.

A major issue I see that contributes to weight loss resistance is either really high or low levels of cortisol. The adrenal glands, which sit right on top of the kidneys, help us combat stress, decrease inflammation and create energy by mobilizing sugar(glucose),that’s stored in the body, for use. When we are under long-term stress, the excess sugar that’s created gets stored as fat, especially abdominal fat, (hello muffin top!) and can lead to insulin resistance and even pre-diabetes. 
Acute stress causes cortisol levels to rise and respond to the crisis, but, if stress continues, overtime, the adrenals become less responsive so cortisol levels may drop down and stay low. Either scenario can lead to weight loss issues. 
In this example, measuring cortisol levels (here with the D.U.T.C.H. Test, Dried Urinary Test for Comprehensive Hormones) there is high cortisol throughout the day, which may not only cause weight gain but may interfere with sleep as well. It’s super easy to make your own. No really, it’s super easy. I made this coconut milk in 5 minutes, and stored in in the fridge for my smoothie this morning. And I promise you won’t have to crack real 🥥 coconuts in this easy version. Plus there are only 2 ingredients. 🥥 💦 ⁣⁣⁣

Coconut milk in cartons is a coconut milk beverage. There is usually a lot of ingredients, including sugars, gums, stabilizers, preservatives, chemicals or ingredients you can’t pronounce, natural flavors (something we should be wary about). So many unnecessary ingredients. ⁣⁣⁣

Coconut milk in a can, is something I like a little more. But, it’s stored in a can. Sometimes there is BPA in the cans, gums, or other ingredients that I find questionable. Some brands are better than others. ⁣⁣⁣

There is another way that really works as a sub for both. Don’t forget to swipe left, to see what it looks like in the jar. ⁣⁣

Homemade Coconut Milk ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
💦 4 cups water ⁣⁣⁣
🥥 2 cups full fat unsweetened dried coconut ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Blend in a VitaMix (or similar blender)⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Pour mixture into a nutmilk bag (you can get  these on Amazon), that’s sitting in a large bowl. ⁣

Strain out the milk with your hands, until no milk is left in nutmilk bag. ⁣⁣⁣

Pour in a glass mason jar, and keep in the fridge.⁣⁣⁣
