I am NOT a cook. I am not a foodie nor am I am a calorie counter. I am however, an advocate of eating wholesome food with a good balance of ‘treats’ as and when. Because let’s face it, life is about living and enjoying ourselves 😊 Rather than restrict ourselves and create hunger and cravings, I really believe in nourishing our bodies using the RIGHT AMOUNT of protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate in order to maintain good metabolic and cardiovascular health. For me, this means monitoring things from time to time, or how else would I know if I am over or under eating? I could ‘listen’ to my body, but sometimes life gets in the way so I am not fully aware of how much/little I am eating. So if you have a goal or an objective for weight management, then I recommend healthy snacking to address cravings, not limiting intake or calorie cutting (the more you restrict yourself the harder things will be!!) and that you try to eat more mindfully, maybe monitoring food intake once a month or so just to check in and be aware of how well you are in line with your goals. Oh, and Apple and Peanut Butter. I recommend that. It’s a great snack! Bit of fibre, fat, carbohydrate and protein and packed full of vitamins 🤤

As long as these treatments don't cause harm to my patients and I am up front about this aspect with them, there's no harm in using them. 
I'm here to help patients, and that usually requires being ahead of the research curve.

It features fresh, seasonal herbs and veggies, takes minutes to assemble and gives you and your fam hearty doses of healthy fats and antioxidants. Plus, it's just a lovely summer dish to enjoy out on the deck while we still have these long summer days 🌞 (although its pouring rain while I write this 😖)

This recipe also features arugula, a bitter green that often gets overlooked for more mild flavored lettuces or spinach. Bitter foods/flavors “talk” to our digestive system and help stimulate digestive juices that aid in digestion and keeping a good microbial balance in your gut. In more traditional diets, you see bitter foods, tonics and beverages included daily, if not at every meal. These days many of us avoid bitter flavors almost completely leaving us at a digestive disadvantage! Note: you don’t have to actually “taste” the bitterness to get the benefits of bitter foods. Our GI tract has bitter receptors throughout that will pickup on those bitter compounds so combine these foods with sweeter, lighter flavors if they’re too much for you or your family.

Today actually marks day 9 post 7-days fast. I posted about my fasting experience in a previous post and I’m journaling my experience so I can write a more comprehensive article on my website where I can also address any of your questions. Here’s what’s happened since I completed my 7-Day detox:

✅ Improved mood
✅ Improved focus
✅ Improved sleep
✅ Improved energy levels
✅ Improved athletic performance
✅ Increased metabolism!

As I move forward, I am practicing a mostly low carb/keto approach with strategic carb loading using berries, white and sweet potatoes, and cassava based foods (@sietefoods tortillas for example) to fuel my workouts. Last weekend and yesterday, I purposefully had higher carb days. I had reported previously that I did this mostly for the anti-aging/longevity/cognitive health benefits but was also frustrated at my metabolism changing dramatically once I hit 55 last summer. I pulled out all the stops to figure this out and I have a lot of tools at my disposal being a functional nutritional therapy practitioner. Since last fall, I did actually work to heal some hormonal imbalances that happened probably due to the bitter sweet stress of becoming an empty nester. Part of of my comprehensive plan besides assessing hormone status included also assessing gut health and food sensitivities, which I did. I’m happy to report that I am now below the weight I had lost at the time I broke my fast. I initially gained back some water weight but as the week post fast has progressed, my fat loss has continued as has all the other benefits. 🙌🏻☺️

With all the torture we inflict on our vaginas these days – waxing, lasering, chemical-laden douches, synthetic tampons and pads, antibiotics, hormonal birth control, vaginal rejuvenation surgery, bleaching, spermicides...I could go on and on – I’m frankly shocked at the backlash in the media about vaginal steaming.

It’s mind-blowing to me that everything I listed above is considered completely normal and okay, but sitting over a bowl of hot water and herbs for 30 minutes is going to ruin our health. I mean seriously?

What’s ruining our health is all the toxic sh*t we keep putting into our bodies, not vaginal steaming, a traditional practice that’s been used by women for a very long time.

I believe we should be asking how we can better take care of women, rather than bashing them for their personal health choices. Especially since we live in a country where maternal mortality is rising, C-sections and hysterectomies are the first and second most common surgeries among women and 58% of women on birth control use it for other reasons than birth control – regulating periods, acne, painful periods etc.

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of DMs asking me questions about my journey and why I am choosing to study holistic nutrition as opposed to becoming a dietician! 
Holism is the theory that certain wholes are greater than the sum of their parts. 
I remember when I attempted to have my medical conditions treated by doctors in the mainstream medical field, a doctor found that I had a vitamin D deficiency. She tried to fix the issue by giving me a vitamin D supplant. After 4 months of constantly increasing vitamin d (I was taking 10,000 ius a day 😲) my levels were still not increasing. A few months later I decided to switch doctors because I was not making any improvements. I found an awesome functional medicine doctor who helped me find the ROOT CAUSES of my health issues. I learned that I had several gut issues that were keeping me from absorbing the vitamin D so no matter how much I took, my levels weren’t goin to go up until I fixed the gut issues! My previous doctor was only looking one issue instead of my body and all of its systems as a whole (as holistic nutrition does). If I could have grabbed those words out of mid air, I would have! I couldn’t believe that I said them! I’m always the one that hides in the corner, praying that no one sees me or at least, I’m the last one who’s called on. 
A transformation happened yesterday of me owning my truth and not being afraid to tell my story. I didn’t want someone to see just a piece of me, I wanted to spread my wings so they could see it all!

Chocolate is a ‘food without brakes’ for me, I do not relate to people who can just eat one or two squares. I love having it but chocolate and all other kinds of refined sugar make me feel noticeably more tired the next day. ⠀

I mostly keep this at bay by not having chocolate in the house. I keep fresh and dried fruits such as dates around so that when I want to eat something sweet I can choose them instead of chocolate, and I feel good about eating them because they're nutrient dense. It is also easier to recognise when you’ve had enough fruit, whereas refined sugar just keeps you hungry for more. ⠀

The thing that has the biggest impact on me not diving headfirst into a family sized bar, is that I hate feeling tired! If I remind myself how I will feel the next day it becomes easier to make a better choice. It means I have to step outside of how I want to feel right now, which can be hard to do in the moment, but I never ever regret it the next day. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels!⠀

This past holiday my daughter decided to cut sugar out of her already pretty healthy diet (other than donuts and sugar in tea and coffee)....the self awareness that this created about how her mood has improved has been awesome 🌱😀....seems Mom know something after all 😉...so glad you are feeling less grumpy my Love 😘
Sugar has many negative effects on the body and is sadly one of the most freely available, addictive substances around. Consuming processed food high in sugars (and often labeled healthy) causes depression, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue and has been linked to other metabolic processes affecting the brain such as bipolar and schizophrenic behaviors. We see and hear a lot about coconut oil these days so what are the benefits?
Coconut oil is a type of saturated fat with medium chain triglycerides that have a different, but positive effect in the body than the other types of saturated fats. 
Coconut oil benefits:
>can be helpful in raising HDL( good) cholesterol as well as well as lowering triglycerides
> breaks down easily in the body, so good food source for quick energy
> contains lauric acid, an immune system booster with antibacterial, anti- fungal and anti- viral properties. >improves  gut health by destroying bad bacteria and fungus like candida
> produces a longer, sustained energy and can increase metabolism >helps skin issues like dry skin, eczema, dandruff and psoriasis

As I sit here writing this post I am oil pulling with about 1 TBL of coconut oil. Oil pulling is just as it sounds, you take coconut oil in your mouth and pull it through teeth (not swishing it around) to help prevent tooth decay and improve the health of your gums. Try adding coconut oil to cooking (medium to high heat), baking, a shake, mix with chia seeds as a snack and spread on GF toast, coffee, or use in place of butter on a sweet potato.

Biggest lifestyle contributions for chronic migraines are •dehydration, •blood sugar imbalances (dysycemia/hypoglycemia) caused by poor diet, imbalanced eating or fasting, •postural dysfunctions (esp. of the back, neck, shoulders...TMJ for ex.), •alcohol & caffeine, •chronic stress (thus the consequential •hormone imbalances), and •food allergies (almost always the case).

Our dinner salad from the other night with little gem lettuce, micro greens, strawberries, sliced almonds, and sliced purple spring onions. Our favorite go to healthy dressing when we don’t have the energy to make one is @bragglivefoods vinaigrette, as it doesn’t have all the junk of most salad dressings.⠀

When I think of salads, I usually think of my mother-in-law. Every year my in laws roll visit San Francisco for the winter and spend an extended period of time with us. One of the best parts is my MIL is an amazing cook and used to run a baking catering business. She loves to help bring dinners to life for our family while visiting during a very busy time of year. One of the things I always take away from her when is remembering how easy it is to have a simple salad at every dinner.⠀

My youngest for the longest time barely touched the salad, and I understand that it took a while for her to figure out salad greens. Although with persistence and consistency both kids now always seem to find a way to enjoy our regular dinner salads. Our youngest prefers dressing free and the oldest loves bragg’s dressings. Even if the kids don’t go for it, that just means there is plenty for the adults to enjoy. Self-care for parents and modeling good habits is a great start to raising healthy eaters.

I feel like a show. It shouldn’t raise attention or be shocking to eat good wholesome food! This week my school is providing breakfast and lunch but you better believe I’ll be carrying around my 6-pack lunch tote with my foods 😂 
Does anyone else feel judged doing that or just me!? I don’t want people already thinking I’m “that girl” but I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to fuel yourself with the right foods. Idk enough rambling...I just hope I’m not the only one who sometimes feels embarrassed to pull out my meal prep ✨

This turned out super yummy! A twist on a Caprese salad 🥗 
Large avocado, pitted and diced
Baby Mozzarella balls (approximately 6-7)
Sliced grape or cherry tomatoes (approximately 6-7)
Handful of diced red onion
Dressing made with 1/8 cup of extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil and 1/8 cup of balsamic vinaigrette stirred together
Salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients in bowl and drizzle with the dressing. Serve immediately. Makes 1 serving.

Here’s my Sunday truth...What does “Healthy” look like?

This pic was taken a few weeks ago on a beautiful beach in Turk & Caicos. I felt horrible at this moment. I woke up that morning incredibly swollen and with horrible stomach pain. I put on my “bloated belly” outfit...elastic waist shorts and a flowy shirt to mask the swollen belly. We went to eat lunch and somehow I got “glutened” which made me swell even more and feel miserable. What a horrible feeling!

I’m posting this picture to show that looking “healthy” isn’t the same for everyone. Sure, overall, I’m a relatively healthy person with no major, life threatening issues, but my chronic illness affects how I look and feel way too often. It’s so hard to put on a happy face when I’m having days where I can hardly get out of bed. It happens to more people than you know. •
To all of my fellow chronic illness warriors, don’t feel like you have to put on a show for others. It’s ok to admit when you’re having a bad day and it’s ok to “be real”. My family is so supportive of me when I have a flare and I’m grateful for them. I hope everyone has the support system you need! You are not alone in this fight!

I have learned over the past few months that a large part of Functional Medicine focuses on stress management.  When I first started learning about FM I thought it was all about food, diets, supplements, fitness.  But what I have learned is that none of that matters if we can't control our daily stressors.  They take a toll on our mental and physical health. .

This week I will focus on stress and explain how it affects us so negatively and truly prevents us from living an optimal life.  Here are a few tips to help you with stress, comment below if one of these hits home with you.

1.  Learn to say “no.” Know and respect your limits and don’t take on more commitments than you can realistically handle.
.
2.  Avoid stressful people. People who continuously stir up drama drain our stress reserves; limit your time with these individuals or avoid them entirely, if possible.
.
3.  Turn off the news or limit your exposure to it. You can still be well-informed without continually feeding your brain stress-inducing information from the media.
.
4.  Let go of pointless arguments. While discussion and debate have their place, engaging in arguments is also a massive tax on our time and energy. Many arguments only serve to entrench peoples’ worldviews further. Learn to let go and move on.
.
5.  Edit your to-do list. Consider what tasks on your list are most important, and drop less important tasks to the bottom of the list.
.
I made my to-do list in order to try to stay focused this week.  It helps my mind to know I start off the week with a plan, even if I don't stick to it 100%.

This summarises a paper by Fukui (2017) exploring gut microbiome-based therapeutics in liver cirrhosis 👨‍💻 It’s a fascinating paper looking at how changes in intestinal microbiota (our gut bacteria) and the possible consequences of this on gut dysfunction (e.g leaky gut, Sibo, etc) may cause/exacerbate liver cirrhosis 😯
