If your pancreas works, take a moment to tell it THANK YOU!
This is type 1 diabetes. Grasshopper got his Medtronic 670g insulin pump and has had it on since Thursday. Three days later, here we are, time for an infusion site change again.
If a person with type 1 diabetes uses syringes or a pen for insulin delivery, they give themselves a shot of insulin 4-6 times a day, sometimes more depending on their blood sugar and when they decide to eat.
Some people with T1D use an insulin pump like Grasshopper’s. His wears his pump in a pouch around his waist. We fill a reservoir with enough insulin for 3 days and insert it into his pump. We put an infusion site on him. The site goes into his skin with a spring loaded needle inserter that leaves behind a tiny tube, a cannula. The pump pushes insulin out of the reservoir, through the tubing and into the cannula just under his skin. From that spot for three days his body absorbs insulin. After about three days the insulin isn’t absorbed as well and we do it all over again.
It is a great tool for managing his blood sugar. We are very grateful to have the technology. But it is not a cure, it is not set-it-and-forget-it, it does not do all the work, it is not painless and carefree. #weneedacure#jealousofyourpancreas#type1diabetes#humanpincushion#medtronic#frio#minimed#novalog#skintac#t1d#t1dlookslikeme#morethansurviving#t1dthriving#sugarrushsurvivors
