#FringeFriday H20 edition With the buzz surrounding bio hacking and sports performance, it’s no wonder someone decided to capitalize on earth’s oldest pre workout—water. Purities and packaging aside, changing the pH of water or adding in hydrogen molecules (H2) can’t really make a difference, right? Or at least so I was asked, which made me stop and think, “water is water, it can’t possibly make a difference. Changing the pH of your blood would pose a major health risk.” But, maybe I was looking at the question from the wrong perspective, or maybe there was an equation I was not taking into account. So I decided to dig into the research and I was shocked at what I found out.
In reviewing the literature on PubMed, I quickly found several solid studies involving mice, showing that H2 enriched water was proven to help in decreasing oxidative stress markers and suppressed the decline of memory impairment and neurodegeneration. Moreover, the mean lifespan in the H2-water group was longer than that of the control group. The researchers in Curr Alzheimer Res (Nishimaki et al 2018) concluded that H2 enriched water may have a potential for suppressing dementia and oxidative stress (a leading cause of cancer and other chronic illness). Pretty cool stuff, but what about humans? In multiple other studies, researchers looked at whether H2 enriched water would have any benefits in treating metabolic syndrome (the combination of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol). The consumption of hydrogen rich water for 8 weeks resulted in a 39% increase in antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase “SOD” (one of the strongest anti-oxidants you can have) and a 43% decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in urine (inflammation marker). Further, subjects demonstrated an 8% increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and a 13% decrease in total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol from baseline to week 4. This means that the subjects decreased their chances of chronic illness, increased their ability to fight cancer, decreased their overall cholesterol and increased the “good” cholesterol!
