[Description: a brown boi eats a chicken wing, Mongolian beef close up, cucumber & herbs salad on take w/ main entrees & sloppy plate.] There's a tradition among Northside #Filipinx people in #Chicago . As an enclave of migration, Chicago Fil community keeps tabs, go to the same places, often w/o any regard to trend or latest fad but with important drives: what tastes the best? what do we crave? can I take my kids here? are portions worthy of my time? A call to these inquiries are one of many a quality from my blood family. What other important quality is in my bloodline, you dare ask? My love of fried chicken. .
Great Sea Chinese Restaurant on Lawrence Ave. is a staple. Upon entering, a lack of pretense is bolted by a wall of chicken wings w/ smiling faces right above glimmering red sauced plates. Numbers upwards of 30-65 almost cackle at you, say YOU THINK YOU LIKE CHICKEN?! Youuuuuu Don't Know Chicken!! It's like United Colors of Benetton, but not at all & way better -- working class, actually Black & Brown people in joy, unified under the umbrella of flavor & chicken scrumptiousness. I'd bet that any Chicagoan on Northside knows somebody pinned proudly on that wall. Faces still w/ sweet chili sauce splattered into teensy islands in dimples, on eyeglass grants, under nail beds. My concern for stranger's digestive tract is a real concern, but let's continue.
My mentor Rhoda & I were famished after a poetry show I had just finished at the local library. As we were spit-balling ideas for meal (both of us born w/ the same stomach), she points "OH man, Great Sea is so good!!" & just as enthused I gasp, "Daammnnn I'll eat there... if you want." My shyness stems from being a people pleaser, but the plead of GS's crispy chicken overcame all odds. We were hype. We sat down. We almost in perfect choreography ordered the go-tos: #MongolianBeef & Fried Chicken + a sesame cucumber salad w/ peppers & herbs, a great cutting acid through a gluttonously rich meal. Mongolian beef is standard. 100+ stars. Supple, sweet, salty meat w/ the bite of green onions, a simple math. (cont'd in comments) .
Be still my heart... my favorite old #EastVillage Korean Fried Chicken & cocktail joint 🍗🍸@monomono.nyc reopened last night after a 5-year hiatus!! I know the fire damaged a lot, but the main space remains quite preserved! The vinyl collection of thousands of records still spin along the ceiling too. 🎶🎶🎶
