Talbot Lago 150 CS

Having popularized the French curve, Joseph Figoni presented a mature teardrop style that elevated aerodynamic design to an art on the Type 150-C-S. The Talbot-Lago Type 150-C-S‘s triumph at the 1937 French Grand Prix brought international fame to the marque. The public sensation aroused by these cars convinced coachbuilder Joseph Figoni to work with the Talbot-Lago company to produce a touring version that would dominate Concours d’Elegance. These works of art marked the peak of the Streamline Moderne movement of the 1930s, elegantly merging the organic form of a teardrop with the extraordinary power of Lago’s uncanny machine.

This Delahaye is one of three surviving vehicles that bear the fluid Figoni body shapes that drew raves during the 1936 Paris Auto Salon. The curved arcs of the fenders established the standard for the “French curves” that are considered a signature characteristic of streamlined automobiles from the 1930s. Indicative of the Art Deco movement’s fascination with the machine and flight, Figoni’s designs were inspired by aviation, particularly by René Couzinet’s Arc-en-Ciel (“Rainbow”) plane. The shape of the pontoon covers on the landing gear of Couzinet’s plane is distinctly mirrored in the Type 135’s voluptuous fenders.

The Louvre museum in Paris has announced it will open its doors for free one Saturday night a month to attract younger, less wealthy visitors.⠀
Home to the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, the world's most-visited museum previously opened for six free Sundays a year, but a statement published Wednesday said this was failing to bring in visitors from a broad spectrum of society. The new nocturnal openings, set to begin on January 5, are to include activities such as a board game area and reading corner to attract families. ⠀

Following WWII mass production became the new model to serve a growing American market and only a handful of coachbuilders survived the postwar depression. Those that survived designed large “enveloped” bodies that American buyers preferred. The 235’s fully enveloped fenders and large steering wheel with its chrome rim and central crown insignia were quintessentially American, mimicking styling that was found on any Cadillac of the era.

At the time of its release, Delahaye marketed the 235 as a new model. They designed and styled for the postwar market, but the chassis was that of a modernized prewar Type 135 MS. It sported a new grille, but retained the old 3.5-liter motor, with minor modifications to the camshaft and carburetors that boosted the horsepower to 150. The Saoutchik styled body was constructed from a unique combination of aluminum (from the doors forward) and steel (applied to the rear), providing balance while reducing the car’s weight. When the car made its debut at the 1951 Paris Auto Salon, the public deemed it exquisite, but the price tag—nearly double the Jaguar’s—was too high. The 235 was Delahaye’s last luxury car, and none was more elegant than this example.

Stop by the museum tomorrow to enjoy our new exhibit The Art and Times of the French Coachbuilders!

1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic
__________
At the height of the Art Deco movement, the refined look of certain machines elevated them to the level of museum objects. In Jean Bugatti’s Atlantic, Picasso had met his match. The Atlantic is the masterwork of Jean Bugatti, an artist who understood the era’s Art Deco aesthetics and an engineer who learned his mechanical craft at the heel of his father, Ettore.
-
The Atlantic is quintessentially Art Deco, a stylistic blend of aesthetic and social philosophies that influenced all aspects of the decorative arts, including items generally mass produced. Ordinary household items such as tea sets, clocks, radios, and toasters were transformed into art objects that were formed using exploratory mediums and futuristic lines. The style is sleek and minimal. One of the rarest and finest cars in the world, the Atlantic brings all of these influences to bear.

1936 Bugatti 57SC Competition Roadster
__________
A high-efficiency car suitable for competing in sports car racing events for the 1937 racing season. When the Bugatti Type 57SC Competition Roadster was first created, automobile racing was considered a gentleman sport. While factory teams showcased their prototype racing models in professional contests, daring individuals were able to purchase a ready-made racecar like this roadster in order to participate in friendly sporting events. The Type 57SC represented a significant achievement in automotive engineering and design. Beyond its avant-garde styling, it was one of the fastest road cars in the world—with its supercharged engine, it could exceed 135mph.

My wife and I visited #paris in September and showed up to tour the #archdetriumph on the day and time that the locals were having a solemn #military #memorial to the equivalent of our #fallensoldiers or #unknowntomb #tomboftheunknownsoldier
The pictures that I am sharing are first the headlines of the damage that the #yellowvest #yellowvests #protestors #rioters caused to a #nationalmonument
The first photo is todays savagery.
The second picture is my photo of the #spiritofliberty #moulding a piece on display in the #arcdetriomphe and on loan from another #frenchmuseum
You see #brokenglass #shattered display case, that was actually looking down over the #tomb below

The final photo was the #relief #reliefstatuary on the front side of the arch itself

France is dealing with disruptive disrespectful losers like our own #occupywallstreet protesters. They took a #taxprotest and made it something that it is not. This approach costs everyone more in the long term. Very sad.

A machine begun by Ettore Bugatti, a sculpture finished by Mother Nature—the “Lady of the Lake” is an archaeological treasure. The Type 22 Brescia was a remarkable Bugatti known in its time as a lightweight and quick voiturette racer. After more than 70 years beneath the waters of Lake Maggiore on the Swiss–Italian border, this Brescia, appropriately named the “Lady of the Lake,” has taken on a new historical meaning as time and nature have completed their story.
-
In 2009, the “Lady of the Lake” was pulled from Lake Maggiore, where it laid half submerged in silt and sand under 170 feet of water. Over time, it became a destination for lake divers and the subject of local lore. As the story goes, the car’s owner, Adalbert Bodé, hid it in the lake in the 1930s to avoid paying registration fees and taxes. Supposedly, Bodé attached the car to a float with a chain, so he could retrieve it later, but the chain rusted through, and the Type 22 drifted to the bottom of the lake.
-
The Mullin Automotive Museum became the Brescia’s permanent home in 2010 after a diving club, Centro Sport Subacquei Ascona, retrieved the car and auctioned it to benefit the Damiano Tamagni Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to the prevention of juvenile violence.

The Citroën 2CV, french for "deux chevaux" meaning “2hp,” was introduced at the 1948 Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and had a remarkably long production run of more than 40 years from 1948 – 1990. The design was conceived by Citroën Vice President Pierre Boulanger to help motorise the large number of farmers still using horses and carts in 1930s France.
-
The 2CV was centered around a combination of innovative engineering and utilitarian design (its rear seat could be taken out and used as a picnic chair). Its extremely low cost, low travel suspension, off road capabilities, simple and low interval maintenance made it one of the most iconic French automobiles. Its most notable characteristic however is its extremely comfortable long-travel suspension that made it extremely capable when driving through France’s dirt country roads.

The idea of owning and living in a castle sounds like a fairy tale. Yet, the practicality of heating, dusting and maintaining a manor the size of several city blocks is daunting, if not overwhelming. And that doesn’t even count doing any yardwork.

For this very reason, it’s rare that any of these châteaux in the Loire Valley are privately owned. Rarer still is it that someone calls a place like this “home.” Nonetheless, since the mid-1700s descendants of the Antoine Walsh and the Duc de la Trémoïlle families have lived in Château de Serrant.

To help offset the astronomical upkeep, the current owners, the Prince and Princess de Merode, charge the public admission to view portions of the estate. This includes the chance to walk through many of the museum-like living areas and sumptuous wood paneled library with its 12,000 books. Furthermore, they rent the orangery and grounds for weddings. How delightful we can share in the fairy tale, without having to wash any of the hundreds of windows.

Our travel book series, “A Picture Is Worth 1,000 Characters™” series, features other stories like this one that are exactly 1,000 characters long, down to the last period. Please check them out on our website www.imaginexxus.com or on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple Books.
