Let’s talk about why frenchies are expensive
And why they have big heads, flat faces, lots of wrinkles, short legs, no tails and short backs.
French bulldogs are a true dwarf breed. They are a micromelic Achondroplasia breed. Meaning they have a growth and development abnormality with the long bones and cartilage. Producing a normal dog on short legs. It can also affect the spine.
frenchie’s are also a brachycephalic breed ( flat faced). The skull bones are shortened while all the soft tissues remains normal. This means the pallet is the same size in a long nosed breed. What happens to all this soft tissue? It creates those adorable wrinkles on the face. The internal soft tissue without the space of a long snout goes to the back of the mouth/throat (elongated pallet) that gives those adorable snorts, snoring and Frenchie sounds.
Then they have a mutation that gives them a bob tail that can also cause missing vertebrae in the spine. It is suspected that two copies of the mutation for bob tail is deadly.
All these mutations and abnormalities comes with health issues.
We all love Frenchie ‘s but few people truly understand what is involved genetically in these exaggerated traits that we find ascetically pleasing. There is a reason frenchies have weak immune systems, loose hips, joint and spine issues. Most people know that dwarfism in humans causes a lot of medical issues but we forget that in our breed we are selectively breeding a dog with dwarfism and yes that comes with some health issues.
French bulldogs are expensive to own and to breed. They have a lot of health issues that we consider “normal” for the breed. Take the time to educate yourself, new breeders and buyers. This breed is not for everyone.
My biggest fear is that the price of these dogs will drop to the point that people who buy them truly can’t afford a Frenchie and the health issues, vet expenses that are common in this breed. These dogs will be dumped in shelters when the owners can’t afford the mounting medical expenses.
I hate to be a snob but frenchie’s were breed by upper class people initially. They were bred for the classes and not for the masses. Selling this breed
