Well, damn. Thank you.
Here's the full review.. "Undoubtedly one of the greatest variety artists at work today, Mat Ricardo is an outstanding juggler and much more beside. Mat Ricardo vs the World, LaughingHorse @ City Café (Venue 85) **** As well as showcasing superbly realised feats of dexterity, Ricardo’s shows are underpinned by his deep knowledge and love of variety forms and histories, his endearingly barbed and quick-witted relationship with the audience, and his willingness to express what performance means to him personally, often in courageously vulnerable ways. All of these qualities are to the fore in Mat Ricardo vs the World, a high-concept show a year in the making. After three decades in the business, Ricardo invited the public to challenge him to learn some new tricks; this show gives us the highly impressive fruits of his resulting efforts. Without giving away too many specific details, some new tricks offer variations on the kind of juggling, balancing and fast-handed expertise that is Ricardo’s stock in trade while others take him further afield.
There’s a brilliantly tense routine inspired by an action movie, flirtations with forms adjacent to juggling such as magic and escapology and novel takes ongolfing and cup-stacking. It’s all performed in a small basement room whose sightlines aren’t all they could be, requiring a certain amount of neck-craning and even seat-standing. The close quarters do give an extra frisson to the work, though: one trick provokedthe purest gasp I’ve ever heard at such a show. Ricardo puts the room’s video screen to judicious use too. As well as showcasing technical expertise, Ricardo makes clear how this kind of work, this kind of challenge, literally helps keep him sane, providing a functional way of playing his general anxiety disorder off against his obsessive compulsive disorder in a “mental health death match” that happens to yield a compelling performance. It makes for another great show from a master of his form."
So, in the spirit of not just showing my shiniest side online.. Yesterday was exactly halfway through my edinburgh fringe, and it wasn't the easiest of days. For whatever reason, my brain chem decided to blip out on me a bit, so I found myself back in bed after my first show, rolled up into a little ball under my duvet, having to slowly persuade myself to get back up, put on the suit, And go do my second show of the day. And what an absurd situation to be in - I'm the luckiest of boys - that second show was laid on because my usual show is full every day, so we wanted to make sure that those we turned away would get a second chance to come. It was a quantifiable sign of success, but an hour before it, I was curled up with a mind full of scary what-ifs, and self-assurances that I was failing. Stupid illness. The shows were fun, and they soothed me somewhat, and I ate healthily, and had an early night, to give myself the best chance of mending. I'm starting to feel better this morning, and as I say in the show, my mental health is best when I'm busy. Well, today is a five show day, so let's go.
Show 10 down the horror rests another day. 11 chances left to see Corydon ovium. Such nice compliments so far. A hammer horror fan throughly enjoyed it. It reminded others of a clockwork orange. Join us on Tuesday for our 11th show at the newsroom 10pm. If you have already seen the show please leave us some feedback on ed fringe website or on our social media pages. #edfringe#horrortheatre#freefringefestival#madness#EdFringe18#intotheunknown
My new show at the Edinburgh Fringe has been completely selling out, which is great for my ego, but I've been feeling bad about all the people we have to turn away every day.
So we're doing a special one-off extra show in a much, much bigger venue, NEXT MONDAY.

Arrive early,avoid disappointment
Spread the word, and COME!
I wrote a piece for @boingboing about some of the ways buskers use psychology and stagecraft to make you watch their shows, and why you should totally still watch their shows!
Completely blown away. First show at the fringe was more than sold out - Literally turned people away at the door. So sorry to them, but wow - that's never happened before. Enjoyed every minute of the show with such a great crowd... Very very happy boy. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Celebratory donut ahoy.
