Writing this week on the PEOPLE—past, present, future—who shape Boston’s #emeraldnecklaceparks. This includes prehistoric communities of 8000 (that’s right eight THOUSAND) years ago who left documented traces of their regular presence in the land that is now the @arnold_arboretum. Thinking lots about how cultural notions of the “civic” shaped alternative efforts to preserve land as public living greenspace to be respectfully tended and enjoyed by all. Since the first colonizers met the Massachusett Native American communities on the Shawmut Peninsula and founded Boston in 1630, what do we acknowledge today? > Still thinking about the #landacknowledgement that @abigailbette & @ddeitsch installed September 12 at @smfaattufts @tuftsartgalleries across from the land named by #fredericklawolmsted as “The Back Bay Fens.” What other names have described what is now the many miles of the Emerald Necklace Park System? #parksbypeople #parksforall #whowasherefirst #masachusett #wampanoag #pawtucket at sites of the #quinobequin and #mushauwomuk 💚 always learning about my home.

Taking photos of musicians Josh Rosen and Stan Strickland at FOG X RUINS in Franklin Park. FOG X FLO (Frederick Law Olmsted). The five sites are placed along the Emerald Necklace park system, designed by Olmsted. Each visit is unique. Different light, wind, pattern of the fog. It is a seductive experience! Fog, water, reflections and artistic performances such as dance and music. The installations have been created by 85 year old Japanese artist, Fujiko Nakaya. The fog sculptures involve a chemical free fog. They create an ever changing conversation with nature. Beautiful tunnel inside Brooklyn's Prospect Park, near the Boathouse. It's an almost meditative walk to pass through it and admire the detail. Another park by the great Frederick Law Olmsted, many sources note that he actually preferred his design for this park over its bigger, more famous neighbor, Central Park in Manhattan. . . .

#rendering and #sectiondrawing of robotic trees in #CentralPark by Ricky Lo @_ricky_lo and Daniel Cedillo completed during the AAD "Extreme Makeover or How Nature can be Built Otherwise" Studio led by @NereaCalvillo of @cmasarquitectos.
.
This studio explored new imaginaries, typologies, technologies, and forms of habitation that emphasize positive and optimistic environmental contributions rather than mere pollution reduction. In addition to technological advancements, projects addressed cultural, social, and political issues. Focusing on Central Park as a site, students examined the design, materials, and technologies employed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the construction of features such as the Great Lawn, Zoo, Belvedere Castle, and Reservoir. Afterwards, they hacked and transformed existing facilities and proposed new interventions as part of a larger makeover. .

Another connection to a man I so greatly admire ~ landscape architect extraordinaire Frederick Law Olmsted!! Bartholdi Fountain “Fountain of Light and Water” designed by Frederick Auguste Bartholdi for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was a symbol of this modern city. It was at Olmsted’s suggestion that Congress purchase it and move it to the base of Capitol Hill. Originally located where the US Botanic Garden stands today, it was moved to its present location after the garden was relocated. Glass globes have replaced the original gas fixtures, but the three nereids remain as youthful today as they did in the Gilded Age Era in which they were created. Thanks to a complete restoration from 2008-2011, this allegorical representation of light and water continues to hold one in awe on Independence Avenue! #fountain #bartholdifountain #washingtondc #augustebartholdi #fredericklawolmsted #gildedage #travelblogger #travel @visitwashingtondc

Fall is a great time to take a walk along the @esplanadeinboston. The Esplande was designed in 1892 by Frederick Law Olmsted. After plans were introduced in 2007 to temporarily reroute Storrow Drive traffic through the park, the Boston Preservation Alliance and Beacon Hill resident Linda Cox petitioned to have the park protected as a recognized Boston Landmark. An unprecedented number of 850 Boston residents signed the Landmark Petition. @bostonlandmarks #autumninboston #charlesriver #greenspaces #historicparks #advocacy #history #preservationbucketlist #fredericklawolmsted #visitboston #hellooctober

At 6:66 P.M. Eastern, during the month of October, a thick and wicked layer of fog comes rolling into The Arnold Arboretum.
.
Okay - I'd really love to lead you to believe the above, but you may already know of my sometimes dark sense of humor.
.
I had an opportunity to visit The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. I entered through the Jamaica Plain entrance which was a short walking distance from a beautiful home I was staying at and owned by two wonderful friends.
.
After viewing and reading through the map at the mentioned entrance, I quickly learned that this Arboretum is pretty fricken humungous. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and is the second largest "link" in the Emerald Necklace.
.
#swipeleft⬅️ if you love viewing trees. This is what I saw.
.
By the way 😎 the fog is actually mist coming from an art installation in the Jamaica Plain section of the Arboretum. .

Hard to capture but still thinking about this exhibition now on view at the @harvardgsd whose research teams interrogate how to visualize the socio-political—and racialized— views that shape public spaces. Zoom in on details of this study, which outlines the original progressive plans of #fredericklawolmsted for access & inclusion in his designs for Boston’s #emeraldnecklaceparks, and how over a century of racial segregation & #redlining neighborhoods, and most importantly—lack of collaboration with local community input, has continued to prevent the development of the greenspace connector Olmsted intended. So grateful for the inclusive structure & progressive vision of the young but might org @emeraldnecklaceconservancy to connect ALL communities to these parks, to carry forward Olmsted’s progressive ideals of connection. #lotsofworktodo #facinghistory #makingchange #citiesarepeople #designshapeslives Thx Stephen Gray & Alex Krieger and the research team for this project! #raceandspace

In October of 1911, John C. Olmsted met Louis Seelbach at the site where his house was to be built. They discussed, among other things, plantings and landscaping. Mr. Olmsted drew a quick sketch during the meeting showing some proposed tree locations. This meeting was memorialized in Olmsted’s notes, seen here.

🍃 The perfect balance of simple design and natural splendor. More thanks to Frederick Law Olmsted for this return visit. All 250+ acres of World's End Park is well kept by the Trustees of Reservations. 🍃

151st almost consecutive swim and dip of the season. Came down with a cold last night, but can’t think of a better place than an Olmsted landscape - my hero - to dip my foot this morning. We fight for clean water and air. We fight for access to these resources. My daily swims are a pleasure and an adventure, but they are also a protest and a reminder to not take anyone or anything for granted.

In 1990, the water in Central Park’s reservoir was lowered to eliminate algae growth—it has been obsolete ever since. This project asks question: To whom are algae toxins harmful? Instead of eliminating the ‘algae problem,’ we propose to intensify the limit of algae so that it can grow from "full bloom" to "totally clean" and explore its potential at different concentrations. We aim to expand the visitors’ experience of algae as well as its contributions to the environment and certain species located in and around Central Park’s various bodies of water. The project proposes a human-made wetland created in the form of a water pathway that serves as the primary algae filtration system.

Afterwards, they hacked and transformed existing facilities and proposed new interventions as part of a larger makeover. .

Followed up by.. a dog-walk through Mount Hope Cemetery at dusk. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1838! Often regarded as the father of landscape architecture, Olmsted’s design of this cemetery is significant for many reasons but particularly as an early representation of the shift in the way we designed and interacted with cemeteries in the late 19th century. Until then graveyards were a place to be avoided. But new picturesque rural cemeteries were places where the public could go for a leisurely walk, a picnic or a carriage ride while amidst beautifully crafted semi-natural vistas accompanied by ornately designed sculptural gravestones. Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are buried here.
