Bought this at Haneda Airport (羽田空港) out of random. Using simple ingredients like sweet potato and chestnut, this Mont Blanc (和菓子屋のモンブラン～小波～) from the Japanese sweet maker Kamakura Goro (鎌倉五郎) was surprisingly good!
Day 11 | Palakkad | Rava Stores
At an intersection of the busy streets of Palakkad is a tiny store from a bygone era . The outlet retails authentic Palakkadan delicacies, primarily pickles, preserves and snacks, prepared in small quantities by gifted home cooks (although a few mass produced items have recently started to infiltrate its shelves). The shopkeeper shuffles around the room sticking his hand into the blue biscuit tins, that line the store, pulling out curious packets of dried vegetables or ‘Vattals’ : salted chilli, lime, lotus stem, beans, bitter gourd, shallots and a few more with unrecognisable names and forms. Every once in a while, he stops to measure freshly ground spices and Pappadams for his regular customers. In contrast to its surroundings, the Rava store feels frozen in time, carrying on with its noble mission to preserve the taste of tradition, in small hand sealed packets, for a new generation.
