#100daysofpractice DAY 54
Yesterday I wanted to explore the abilities of this Amadeus alto flute by @haynesflutes. I decided to give this a trial run this week, all thanks to @flutecenterofny and @morgan.pappas! 💜
I thought it would be good to explore not only the instrument itself, but also dig into Chris Potters, Alto Flute Method. If you are looking into getting an alto flute or starting out on it, give this book a try! 😉 It has been a couple of months since I last played alto, so it was all about refreshing on the basics!
-My practice first started out making simple sounds, by exploring the color in the lower register with both loud and soft dynamics.
-Next, I worked out my “ha’s” and more of a “da” in the middle register. In the book, C. Potter suggests trying middle E natural first, by applying the second trill key (to prevent cracking) and then play without it. I never knew about this trick before, but it definitely helped my focus on the sound!
-I then worked harmonics with low E, again exploring with sound, color and my capabilities of producing these tones on the instrument!
-I also worked with these neat scale patterns C. Potter arranged for the alto since it works with the range of the instrument. I wanted to be fluid with the lines, not crunched, and I wanted to speak out ALL the notes (even the lowest!)
-Lastly I tried out both a lyrical and technical passage the book provided. It was helpful for me to explore how much musicality I could bring forth through the instrument!
So far, I am definitely liking this instruments sound, plus I didn’t record this but it’s so much easier to play the 3rd octave with this guy! 😄
What do you guys think? 👂🎵
Congratulations to Raeann from Crestwood Schools on her new flute purchase. This talented student is a member of her school music program, performing in the Symphonic Winds and Scarlett Guard. She is also active in her school’s Drama Club. Good luck to you, Raeann!
