Phil Shaltz, a downtown Flint businessman, is the executive producer of "The Wolf Hour." The film was accepted into the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. "The Wolf Hour" stars Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts as a once-famous counterculture figure who retreats from the spotlight and lives as a shut-in in the South Bronx during the late 1970s. From her apartment, she witnesses escalating tensions in New York, including the “Summer of Sam,” a massive heat wave and rioting. Shaltz became involved in the film industry less than two years ago, but he has long had a passion and interest in it. “The Wolf Hour” is the first of three films he is involved in. Shaltz told Flintside, “Maybe one of these days, one of the films will play in Capitol Theatre. That would be a great thing for this all to come full circle and add to the great acclaim of this city.”
La Esperanza is back! Stop by our cafes in downtown Flint or Owosso and experience the first coffee ever roasted in the Foster Roastery. This amazing single origin coffee is meticulously cultivated by brothers and 4th generation coffee farmers Herman and Erick on their 55 acre farm in Guatemala, La Esperanza. With tasting notes of cocoa, citrus, and warm spice, La Esperanza is one of our all time favorites and we're sure you'll love it too! Photo: @joemattesonphotography
#Stone implements preserve well in the archaeological record—most of what was processed using them does not. Gourds (#gourd ) like the #calabash have been also known from archaeological sites from 15,000 years ago. I inherited this kinky gourd from my Mom’s partner and decided to add my touch, converting it into a container for #tinderfungus maybe. Larger calabashes were used for keeping eggs in the pantry (my maternal grandma used one up until her death in the 1980s). — Holes drilled using the #flint drill; #roedeer#rawhide#cordage . I will eventually learn flint #burin technology and will engrave my gourd, giving it some personality either as a fertility godess or as a fish or something. Living in the #stoneage , you don’t always have to rush things. Some tropical stoneage tribes spend about three hours a day engaged in activities we would consider ‘work’; the rest is spent sleeping, playing, eating, having sex, intrigue—when the village is overpopulated, that is, it reached more than 400 people or so, and is ready for splitting—and waging wars against neighboring villages, mostly over women leaving their husbands, or to kidnap women (etymologically, the modern Hungarian word for a bridegroom means ‘a lad who kidnaps’ or ‘kidnap lad’, and kidnapping the bride during the wedding party is still a ritual—so much for primitive savages). #experimentalarchaeology
Hungary has not had a sea for a looong time (the closest sea is the Adriatic). In fact, obtaining #Spondylus (#thornyoyster#spineyouster ) shells via long distance trading from the #Adriatic was the craze of the day in the late #Neolithic . #Barice in what is today #Bosnia and #Herzegovina (#bosniaandherzegovina ) was a shell #bead manufacturing site about 400 km from my place (that’s driving on a motorway). (The shell in this project comes from a pet shop; it was meant for decorating a holding facility for innocent captive tropical fish.) — To create the hole, I first ground the shiny, hard outer layer off using my favorite piece if Swedish #sandstone (I actually keep it in my bathroom and use it to touch up the edges of my freshly clipped nails—so much nicer and so much more durable than any commercial throw-away alternative) and, once the shell wall was thin enough, I used one of the drills (#drill ) I knapped from Danish #flint (#flintknapping ). For cordage, I used #roedeer#rawhide I processed myself (another fun project involving ticks, blood, ash and a lot of scraping). #experimentalarchaeology
