The Otto C. Lightner Museum of St Augustine, Florida. This museum of antiquities, mostly from the American Gilded Age is housed within the historic Hotel Alcazar building in downtown St. Augustine. The 1887 Spanish Renaissance Revival style building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places original built for the Flagler family.
The history of the two gentlemen connected to the building and museum is as interesting as all the items on display. Mr Flagler was the genius behind Standard Oil's rise in the 1880s. Through agrresive business deals, at one time Standard Oil controlled upwards of 90 percent of all oil refining in America. One name commonly associated with Standard oil is Rockerfeller who was Flaglers partner. Otto C. Lightner was a publisher of a Hobby Magazine, with family roots back to the American Revolution. After the stock market crash in 1929, Mr Lightner started buying the possessions of former wealthy families in the city of Chicago. He housed them in warehouses until he bought Hotel Alcazar in St Augustine. Then moved them all to Florida and into the hotel-Museum. Once established as a museum, he donated it all to the City. #lightnermuseum#saintaugustine#flagler#rockerfeller#hotelalcazar#glidedage#historicregister#florida#roadtrip#loveadventurexo#architecture#standardoil#chicago#1929#revoltionarywar#spanishrenaissancerevival
