It was windy and cloudy and on the verge of storming all day today, and we like to think Mary Shelley would have appreciated that. Link in bio.

And the prize for the most gothic book bag at the #hayfestival2018 goes to...me (probably) can’t wait to get my teeth into these 🖤#stephaniemerritt #fionasampson #literature #gothic #maryshelley #thriller #readinglist
My library tbr pile is looking super attractive at the moment... mainly because as I'm sure you know, the holds always come in at the same time (curse you library gods!). I'm pacing myself but I think I'll manage things! Next off the pile will be Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie as voted by you all 😊 I'm really looking forward to reading this new bio of Mary Shelley too.

In search of Mary Shelley - The girl who wrote Frankenstein by Fiona Sampson

I first read Frankenstein a few years ago and was surprised how much I loved it. I didn't know anything about it or its author before. Loved the book and highly recommend this new biography. Great read!

@agatadraws and I went along to see Fiona Sampson give a brilliant talk on Mary Shelley at the British Library this evening, and I had a lovely chat with her afterwards when she signed my copy of the book 😌 It’s a wonderful biography and well worth a read! #maryshelley  #frankenstein  #fionasampson
Sampson Sunday...In Search of Mary Shelley by Fiona Sampson is a fascinating biography that has been released this year to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
🧟‍♂️
Mary Shelley was the daughter of the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and the revolutionary philosopher William Godwin. At the age of sixteen, Shelley eloped with notorious poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Before early widowhood changed her life forever, Shelley experienced debt, infidelity and the death of three of her children. These dramatic circumstances provided the backdrop to her creation of Frankenstein, at a time when female writers were faced with difficult obstacles and challenges. Frankenstein remains one of literature’s most revered classics and its impact and legacy continues to leave its imprint on literature and film today.

We were delighted to host an evening with Fiona Sampson last Tuesday night and we have many signed copies in our stores!

“Adaptation is a mark of a survivor’s intelligence, and she was a great survivor. Out of material we would most of us find overwhelming she created an astonishing life. Despite being born a girl and motherless in her particular time and place, and despite being almost crushed by the ‘great men’ around her, she produced, while still only a teenager, the novel that uniquely sums up the restless, experimental spirit of her Romantic times. She changed the face of fiction; she has challenged every ‘modern’ generation since she wrote her first novel to explore both empirical science and moral philosophy; and in the hubristic researcher Frankenstein and his creature, the nearly human of our nightmares, she created two enduring archetypes.” In Search of Mary Shelley, by Fiona Sampson.

Although I sometimes felt that Fiona Sampson went a little too far with her imaginative inferences, I was fascinated by this biographical excavation of the extraordinary life of Mary Shelley.
