The first printed record of the Whisk(e)y Sour - a direct descendant of punch and originally comprised of whisk(e)y, lemon, sugar (the addition of egg white is a European thing that came to America after Prohibition) - appears in a certain iconic bar manual of 1862. It was a knockout fave of American drinking at that time and enjoyed significant popularity for another 100 years and beyond. And it remains to this day a much loved drink. We certainly count ourselves as fans - as do a number of our Grey Tiger buds - and we're inspired by the countless riffs on the template that exist. But nothing beats the magical balancing act of the original.
At a wedding party a long time ago, a young woman ordered a Whisk(e)y Sour from Ryan. When he served the drink, she asked: "Why is this not green?" "Because I used fresh juice and real sugar instead of artificial sour mix," he replied. She then took a sip and her face exploded with amazement. "This is delicious!" "That's a real Whisk(e)y Sour. Made with love and fresh ingredients. And that's what you deserve. I hope you never accept anything less from now on." And that's how we roll over here. We respect the classics and do them up with fresh ingredients and loving attention.

Since I cover 4 liquor stores this summer, I get to drive quite a bit through the beautiful Eastern Township countryside. I cannot help but stop at most fruit and veggie stands that are popping by the side of the road at this time of year to see what bounties they sell. When I saw these white currants (they have the cutest name in French, the are called gadelle), I got super excited. White currant have a delicate sour taste that work beautifully in this gimlet. It’s the season, so give this a try (it works nicely with red currant too). 〰️White currant gimlet〰️
1 ½ oz Tanqueray 10 Gin
¾ oz of white currant syrup
½ oz lime juice
Shake with ice and strain. Garnish.
