What is true for you? We usually become pretty good at doing what we want or need to do. But over time, is this serving us?
Let’s get curious about this, using one of the most common yoga poses, tree pose. ▶️ First, stand comfortably with your back against a wall (we’ll use the wall for some feedback).
▶️ Come into YOUR tree pose. Lift one leg and turn it out to the side (external rotation) placing the foot wherever it happens to land on the standing leg.
▶️ Notice if you’ve kept both bum cheeks against the wall or has something shifted? Is only one side now making contact? Notice how high you were able to lift your leg and where it makes contact with the standing leg.
When I come into MY tree, my foot lands at about the knee. The external rotation of my leg is about 45 degrees.
In order to get my tree pose to LOOK how it’s most often demonstrated, pictured, described in books, I need to shift my pelvis. Then, as the top of my torso ends up facing sideways I need to re-adjust and shift the top part of my body so it’s facing straight ahead. Now it LOOKS like I’m in TREE. At least, according to some.
And can you imagine what this might FEEL like in my lower back or SI joint? Particularly if I keep repeating this over and over again? Where might the force, the torque or twisting required to do this, show up?
At the moment I can’t rotate my leg bone to 90 degrees. So, I can either choose to create a couple compensatory strategies to LOOK a certain way, to DO the pose. Or I can remain with my 45 degree angle, taking good care of my back and work mindfully, patiently, towards creating further external rotation if I choose to do so.
What is is TRUE for you? What is it you’re choosing? I have no problem with either way. Just know that either choice will have its own set of consequences.
Isn’t it funny how you can try to use words to describe a feeling, and by saying them out loud, the feeling’s already shifted so that the words that barely fit in the first place are shabby at best?
That happened with this, and I’m posting anyways, because it sure was honest in the moment. And it felt alive.
And I guess what’s becoming more important than having something important to say is to just say the something that feels alive, even if it’s fleeting and shifting and only a small part of something bigger.
Maybe sometimes not “even if” but possibly even “especially because.”
I know, everybody talks about selfcare and you probably don't need another list of what you could do to feel better. Right? Well, you never know! You might read something on my list and it suddenly clicks and you start a new healthy habit today.
So here are a couple of things I do (almost) on a daily basis that help me to feel good and to literally not go insane.

Getting up early and starting the day with silence and me-time (30 min. before everybody else gets up)
Journaling (2-3 pages a day - this changed my life)
Morning Walk (about 30 min.) - non-negotiable during the week
Caressing my body
Masturbating (are people still thinking this is a sin?)
Brushing my hair preferable before I go to bed. It feels like heaven
Using essential oils on my body or in a bath. Go-tos are lavender and geranium
Eating nourishing food. I love salads. I make my dressing ready for the entire week so it takes me 10 min. to prepare my lunch
Enjoying a hot chocolate (almond milk, organic cocoa...that's it)
Listening to music that makes me wanna dance (I have several spotify playlist for different moods)
Taking a lot of really deep breaths throughout the day (taking one right now!)
Doing something creative like painting, crafting, writing a letter to a friend
Taking my time to get ready in the morning (shower and choosing what I want to wear)
Listening to my body and what it really needs in the moment (water, movement, food, rest etc.)
Being super present while preparing my food, while having a shower, while listening to another person
Making my food look pretty (Life is too short to eat ugly looking food)
Putting on some candles and lighting some sage
Pulling a tarot card from my own deck and setting an intention for the day
Cuddling with whoever is around
Giving myself time to dream usually when I lay in the bath
Planting my feet on the earth/grass/water
Translation: The fingers on which there should have been softness are bruised due to harsh labour. Oh Life! You have your own lessons.
Many of them are still fighting for food, for clothing, for those basic necessities that we are gifted with. Never underestimate your blessings, never regret your life, help someone to live a life that they dream. The life you are living is a dream of many. Appreciate what you have.
Let that inner child be alive who knows how to be grateful, how to be happy without reasons, how to accept without conditions, and how to help without expecting in return.

I found a poem I wrote about four years ago. I recorded myself reading it, one take. I recorded myself listening to myself read it, one take.
The words don’t really matter, do they? They say the same things we all know. But in the saying them, something happens to the sayer. And in the listening, something happens to the listener. The words aren’t alive, but the experience is.
And so, to say or move or be? That’s magic. Maybe we don’t have to get so caught up in WHAT to say? Maybe just listen to the opening, and see what happens if we give ourselves permission.

Like posting videos of myself feels weird. Self conscious. And it’s not really ‘real’ practice coz I knew I was filming it. But just a tiny example of what my yoga kinda looks like at the moment. Well yesterday at least...
Keeping it simple. Starting from a familiar place. Playing for joy. Exploring spaces, inside and out. Moving slow (This is 4x speed).

With a light dusting of snow the earth begins to feel hard. Stiff.
You might feel a little of the same upon waking in the morning. Perhaps not having moved much through the night, our joints feel rigid, unyielding.
As we did with the feet last month, why not prepare the legs and hips a little even before getting out of bed, with these gentle leg circles.
▶️Laying on your back, bending the knee as you begin to move, draw one leg up towards the chest.
▶️ Imagine you’re drawing circles with the knee and circle the leg one way, perhaps 3 or 4 times. Then stop, and draw the circles in the opposite direction.
▶️ If you need to use your hand to support the moving leg, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, don’t use your hands and just use the muscles around your legs, your hips, to do the movement.
▶️ Remember you can always #DoLess . Start small. #ChooseEase .
▶️ Place your leg back down on the bed and repeat with the other leg.
Certainly, you can do this at any time of the day laying in the floor, but why not try it even before your toes touch the ground to begin your day.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself growing more sensitive, more in tune, maybe even more emotional as your practice grows. Oh yoga. Sometimes you scare me with how much I can feel, but every time I practise I am so thankful I grow my ability to empathise, get stronger and practise being fine with my own vulnerability.
