Some light reading on a fast day.

I have found consistent benefits from intermittent fasting both for myself and my clients. I often do 16:8 where I fast for 16 hours and just eat in an 8 hour window but the best results for me come with 5:2 -eating normally for 5 days and on 2 days eating only 500 calories. I tend to extend the fast and start eating at about 4pm.

The benefits go way beyond weight loss. Autopaghy is a process whereby, when fuel in the body is low, the body will recycle old cells and use what it doesn't need for energy. The benefits include longevity, decreasing disease risk and detoxing.

More recently I am finding my body detoxing emotional 'junk' as well. Apparently it is a thing. Emotions come up and I have the chance to identify and clear them. So beneficial although it has led to some sleepless nights.

I feel lighter in more ways than one and who doesn't want to go into Christmas feeling lighter and freer.

Now for some realtalk. Why do most young guys start to lift & diet? Abs & girls, be honest. Now, first of all, the fact that you think that abs go hand in hand with getting girls is already a bit skewed but when you are young/immature, unfortunately it happens & girls will tend to lean towards the more "athletic" "swole" guy in school BUT come 23,24,25 if truth be told, they don’t give a S**T anymore & are more impressed by someone who has a great personality, good job, is fun to be with & who can go out with to the cinema or restaurant to eat with. Where am I going with this? WASTED, CRUCIAL, YEARS.

Guys dieting to get shredded when they are in their teens to get girls are those who will end up getting nowhere with their physique long term. Trust me, I’m speaking from personal experience here whereby I got to 6,7,8% bf when I was far too young (16-17) which ultimately f**ked up my overall progress. Why? Because when you get that lean that early, anything else above that seems fat. Results? You mind fuck yourselves for YEARS & constantly live on low calories/in a deficit because you fear going to 10-12% when bulking. Results? You enter your early 20's having missed out on ALL your “noob” gain periods where studies show you are primed for making progress & GROWTH (Ratamess  2008, Rutherford & Jones 1986) & end up a 22yr old at the same weight & size that you were when you were 17. Its then do you realise that you have gotten nowhere over the past 5+ yrs. & finally realise that abs aren't everything & that staying lean (10-12%) to actually make some proper GAINS in strength & muscle is alright & far more productive AND guess what, girls still like you lol, but this time even MORE because you can actually go out with them without having to sit eating out of a Tupperware full of broccoli at the restaurant.

Nah, sister. Don’t do it. While there are certainly factors each individual must consider - including how much weight you have to lose - you need to consider taking a diet break after about 12 weeks. This especially holds true if you are trying to lose somewhere between 10-30 pounds. If you have more weight to lose, you could probably very well diet for longer and be fine.

Other signs you might need to take a diet break include very low energy levels as well as your workout performance suffering.

I also wouldn’t recommend trying to diet and gain muscle concurrently - as this is a virtually impossible combination. Like trying to ride 2 🐴 with one 🍑. Pick one thing to focus on, and go after it.

And, let’s get serious - do you really want to diet during the holidays? Sure, you can do it if it’s not a big deal for you to do so, but otherwise I’m a bigger fan of enjoying friends, family & food and going into maintenance mode.

Personally I like Intermittent Fasting because it allows me to wake up and get right into my day without having to think about food (skip breakfast). Everyone does their fasting differently but I have 600 calories a day and I try to wait until 11am to eat my first snack, then I eat little snacks through the day and generally have a dinner of around 300 calories. Lots of water, fruit teas, black coffee and a can of Diet Coke to keep the variety going.
