~✨Autumn✨~ So happy to see these gorgeous gourds on sale • Veggies rich in orange pigments are loaded with beta-carotene, which we convert to Vitamin A • This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant, and may protect against cancer. It is involved in keeping our skin and membranes healthy (think acne, eye health, gut health), is needed by our immune system, helps our vision and may protect us against cognitive decline 🍊 .
🎃 If we eat loads of red/orange coloured vegetables and our skin starts going orange, it’s a sign that our body is struggling to convert the carotene into retinol (vitamin A). Perhaps less easy to detect with so much fake tan about...🤣 • Interestingly, lots of green veg is full of beta carotene (peas, kale, cabbage, chard, asparagus, dandelion) but the chlorophyll that makes those veggies green is stronger than the orange pigment, so you don’t see the orange colour. Pretty cool, eh? • .

It has been said that "The eyes are the mirror to the soul." Well, I found out 1st hand that the eyes are also a reflection of what's in the body. The American Academy of Ophthalmology defines glaucoma as ..."a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve." According to the National Optometric Association, “…glaucoma is more frequent, more progressive, occurs at an earlier age and produces more severe consequences in African Americans…”. Peripheral vision is the 1st to disintegrate & because the average person would never notice the inability to see things on the side of them, it’s easy to go unnoticed. We’re encouraged to get yearly physicals, dental checks, mammograms, prostate exams, & colonoscopies. How often do we hear about comprehensive eye exams (includes pupil dilation & the dreaded “air test")? A few years ago, I was labeled a glaucoma “suspect”. For several weeks, I went through a series of tests during various times of the day so that my optometrists could gauge if the elevation was the way God made me or pending glaucoma. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned. Ultimately, an exam revealed that my optic nerves, eye draining slits and peripheral vision are in good shape. Let me be clear. It DOES NOT mean I can now skip exams. In fact, it’s quite the opposite because the disease can develop at any time. When I polled several friends & associates, I found that many only visit eye doctors when their vision is no longer 20/20; moreover, they go to places that do nothing more than write prescriptions for glasses & contacts. I’ll admit that the bright lights, eye drops, & all the fancy machinery can be disconcerting, but they are necessary in preventing or catching early signs of eye diseases. What does it profit us to groom the outer parts of our eyes but neglect what’s inside? The moral to the story is: Don’t forget to look out for your eyes because your eyes are looking out for you! @nationaloptometricassociation

This is a video of our keratoconus patient Tamir who recently visited us from Santiago, Chile. We first met Tamir over 8 years ago. Prior to visiting us, Tamir was unable to see clearly and comfortably with the lenses provided him back home. He was told that he might need to undergo corneal transplant surgery if he was ever to see clearly. Over the years Tamir was fit with Rose K lenses and hybrid lenses. For the past 5 years Tamir has been wearing scleral lenses which are providing him with clear (20/15) comfortable vision. For the past 8 years Tamir’s vision and eyes have remained stable. He will never need to undergo corneal transplant surgery. Looking forward to seeing Tamir next year.
