It’s #wellnesswednesday and this week we are focusing on how smoking and secondhand some is bad for your eyes. Did you know smoking increases the risk of macular degeneration by 4 times?! Macular degeneration is a progressive disease where a person loses his central vision. Halloween is coming and this year we will be offering colored contact lenses that are safe to wear. A contact lens is considered a medical device that needs to be fit properly and evaluated by a professional. Please please please don’t buy them online or from a store!!!
SIGHT BY SARAI 👁 // When being fitted for scleral lenses, it may take two or three tries to get the perfect fit but rest-assured, Dr. Sarai won’t stop until you are happy and have the best sight possible 🙌🏽 As you can hear from this recent patient, his vision is now terrific and they provide him with much better comfort compared to hard lenses and ROSE-K lenses.
Happy Pirate Day! When children are diagnosed with a specific type of lazy eye sometimes they have to wear a patch over their better seeing eye to help make the lazy eye stronger! Eye exams are very important in children because having a lazy eye can go undetected for many years.
What do you do on your days off? I think I am finally starting to learn the importance of what some people call “Self-Care”, which is sometimes hard to come by as a mom, wife, and business owner. I’d like to think I’m not alone here; I talk to & connect with so many patients who are giving so much of themselves to others but not leaving any time to care for them self. I came across this podcast where the guest talked about focusing on work-life satisfaction instead of work-life balance. There will be seasons when work will be heavier or, maybe its kids or relationships, but the key is to find satisfaction in those areas and not necessarily balance. Identifying our own pockets of time to take care of ourselves is essential to being better moms, wives, friends, employees and employers. So, maybe it’s a day off or those fringe hours before work, or even after the kids go to bed, but give yourself permission to read a book, exercise or whatever satisfies your soul. #selfcare#taketimeforyou

Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Some of the sun’s effects on the eyes include:
Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision. An estimated 20% of cases are caused by extended UV exposure.
Macular degeneration, resulting from damage to the retina that destroys central vision. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States.
Pterygium, a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eyeball, causing astigmatism.
When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation, so you can keep your vision sharp and eyes healthy. A wide-brimmed hat offers great protection, too!
Did you know? In order to wear contact lenses comfortably and avoid irritation from dry eyes, your eyes must be able to produce enough natural tears. During your eye exam, our doctors evaluate your tear film and tear ducts to determine the best options for you. Call 630.855.5542 to schedule a consultation TODAY. ▫️The loss of an eye requires early replacement so that the patient may return to a normal aesthetic life. .
▫️Prosthetic replacement of eye helps the patient to live a normal happy life. .
▫️Most patients get benefit from custom made ocular prosthesis that are modified to the individual needs, while some through customized prosthesis.
▫️Ocular prosthesis requires meticulous patient evaluation, examination of the defect and supporting tissues of the eye and willingness of the patient/guardian.
▫️This approach is more time consuming, but the esthetic and functional results are better with this technique. .
▫️The disfigurement resulting from the loss of an eye can cause significant psychological as well as social consequences. .
▫️With the advancement in ophthalmic surgery and ocular prosthesis, patients can be rehabilitated very effectively. ——————————————————.

Eyelid on initial visit affected by severe Staphylococcal blepharitis as noted by scaly, yellow-white deposits on lid surface with secondary folliculitis involving 2 lashes. Professional in-office lid deep cleansing (debridement) done with ZocuKit Eyelid Intervention System. Daily at-home therapy with a Zocular eyelid regimen is critical (ZocuWipe once in AM and ZocuShield gel twice daily in this case). Patient reported resolution of eyelid redness, swelling, and pain within 3-4 days without any antibiotic, steroid, or other lid hygiene products. Photos taken at 2-wk return visit. Another Zocular success story!
This patient presented with a yellow spot at the fovea (red arrow) in both eyes. On OCT, there was an abrupt disruption of the inner ellipsoid zone. Upon questioning, the patient suffered from a mental disturbance that caused him to stare at the sun for 3 hours, 4 months ago.
Solar retinopathy is a photochemical retinal injury caused by either direct or indirect viewing of the sun. The risk of damage is higher in patients taking drugs causing photosensitivity such as tetracycline and isoretinoin, while it is reduced in patients with darkly pigmented retinae and those with high refractive errors.
Symptoms of solar retinopathy include decreased vision (in the range 6/7.5 – 6/30) with associated central scotomas. Metamorphopsia, dyschromatopsia, micropsia and headaches occurring within hours of exposure are also commonly experienced.
There is no effective treatment for solar retinopathy. In many cases, visual acuity may recover to normal, however some patients have residual small central or paracentral scotomas. The extent of damage and prognosis are dependent on many factors including the duration and intensity of the light source during exposure, ocular pigmentation, ocular media clarity and environmental conditions.
Pachychoroid pigment epitelyopati (PPE) is forme fruste of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). In the present study, we determined choroidal vessel density using a new thresholding method developed by our clinic. Our study revealed that there is no difference between eyes with CSC, PPE and uncomplicated pachychoroid with regard to subfoveal choroidal thickness and choroidal vessel density. Choroidal hyperpermeability is the main difference between complicated (CSC, PPE) and uncomplicated eyes with pachychoroid.

According to a recent study by Westmead Institute for Medical Research, a new study has shown that people who regularly eat oranges are less likely to develop macular degeneration than people who do not eat oranges.⠀
Researchers at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research interviewed more than 2,000 Australian adults aged over 50 and followed them over a 15-year period.⠀
The research showed that people who ate at least one serving of oranges every day had more than a 60% reduced risk of developing late macular degeneration 15 years later.⠀
Lead Researcher Associate Professor Bamini Gopinath from the University of Sydney said the data showed that flavonoids in oranges appear to help prevent against the eye disease.⠀
"Essentially we found that people who eat at least one serve of orange every day have a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration compared with people who never eat oranges," she said.⠀
"Even eating an orange once a week seems to offer significant benefits." So get juicing those oranges!
