The Berkshires might slogan themselves as 'America's Cultural Resort', but for some, they instead found the portal to hell in these hills.
This is the Hoosac Tunnel, a legendary piece of New England infrastructure, ingenuity, and site so tragic and miserable, it's builders called it 'The Bloody Pit'. The Berkshires were a barrier to travel and trade, until an ambitious project in the 1800s aimed to change it, by building a railroad under the mountains.
Construction was astonishing. The tunnel's path was only decided using 4 plumbobs as survey tools hanging from tree branches on mountain tops. 2 foolhardy crews worked on both sides of the Hoosac Range, and blasted their way into the mountains until they'd meet one another, which took about half a century and was described as "building a sandcastle in the mud". Eventually, both teams met up, and were off by only an inch!
The original big dig and the first project to use nitroglycerin - claimed an estimated 300 lives, cost $15 million, runs for 5 miles and both became a modern marvel and a place that's still reported to be haunted by all who died there.
Even today, the deep dark passage is permanently stuck to the flypaper of New England urban legend.
Another interesting point was how the railroad crews encased Cascade Brook in a stone sluiceway - handmade by local stone and topped with old iron rails.

I am really not that interested in the mating habits of bugs, but they keep insisting on educating me.
A sunset shot from our walk to get dinner yesterday arvo. Having trouble finding pretty pictures in my boring suburban neighbourhood.
The setting sun behind one of my favorite trees.
Hawaiian sunsets are the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen 🌴🌅

What a fabulous few days in Toronto! Honestly, this was a city I never liked that much, but this trip changed my mind completely. Congratulations to @travelingmitch & @bdobs19 on a gorgeous wedding! The bride was stunning, the groom was a dancing queen, and I cried at least twice. Weddings are the best!
Thank you to @erinmorawetz & Mrs. Morawetz for hanging out and showing me why you guys love Toronto!
Photos: CN Tower views & selfie, hanging out in the distillery district, Jazz night at the aquarium (as you do), Chinatown, Queen Street, and a peak at the wedding.
