Are your breakfast meals for you and your family on carb overload?⠀

More often than not, breakfast meals get the shaft on balance and are often times heavy on the carbs with maybe a decent amount of protein and most likely little veggies. Here are a few tips on creating more balance with your breakfast meals. ⠀
⠀
1. Choose a whole grain carb. Look for the whole grain symbol, otherwise oats are a great option. This will help keep you fuller longer. ⠀
2. Pick a protein. There may not seem like a whole lot of options for breakfast proteins, but I suggest eggs, nut butters or lean sausage. ⠀
3. See where you can incorporate veggies. I recommend in your eggs, or as a side such as the leftover sweet potatoes I used here. ⠀
4. Add a bit of sweetness with a fruit (not pictured here). Try to go for whole fruit vs juice.  This way you get the fiber and natural sugars, not potential added sugars. ⠀
5.  Last, but not least, make sure you always have something you really enjoy on your plate. You should enjoy all of it, but pick something you’re really excited about. This may be bacon or a piece of toast with butter or cheesey scrambled eggs. Everyone has different fav foods. ⠀
6. Still having trouble?  Throw something from each food group in the blender and wah-la, a balanced breakfast. ⠀

Why am I showing you a picture of my garbage? To remind you to not let a moment of weakness ruin everything.  It's been a rough day at our house. The kids have been extra demanding and one of them has been super mischievous lately. Anyway, I just wanted to treat myself to a guilty pleasure. But I was less than halfway done with it and I wasn't enjoying it as much as I wanted to. But I was going to just finish it anyway until one of my dad's many catch phrases came to mind. "It's better for the food to go to waste than to your waist." Now this is not me promoting undereating! Fuel your body. Give it good things. And enjoy the not-so-healthy things. But don't force yourself to eat something that isn't even good for you for the sake of not wasting it. If I had finished that bowl of ramen, no starving child would be better off, and neither would I.

I’m thinking a cheeky spritz and some good food enjoyed in the company of family is on the cards this weekend ❤️🍹 There is nothing I love more than sharing delicious food with the ones I love, and I’m a big believer in balance - I eat nutritious meals as much as I can, but when the opportunity arises for dinner with my husband or a shared meal with family, I am simply present in the moment and enjoy the food and the experience without worrying about a second thought. It’s a very relaxed approach, because food should be fun and delicious, not stressful! Is this something you struggle with?

I’m going to be out of the country for Thanksgiving so I need to make sure I had a turkey dinner. So, I had a gluten free Thanksgiving meal a week early. Even before I gave up gluten, I never cared for stuffing or gravy. So, I didn’t bother trying to find gluten free alternatives. Since I’m dairy free too, no mashed potatoes on the plate either. I don't believe in cheat days. It stirs up cravings we think we shouldn't eat. And it makes it harder to incorporate into a lifestyle. I'm not telling you to go eat everything in sight. I'm sure we all have an idea of what eating well and what is not. And there are millions of informational sites and books which guide you on what to eat. If you ate it, accept it, move on and know if you trained your body properly it will deal with whatever you put in it. 🤓
