Daniel Shapero Vice President of Talent Solutions, Careers, and Learning at LinkedIn.
When asked how work today compares with work 10 to 20 years ago, Dan says the biggest changes are around talent. “If you look at the most important companies in the world, if you look at the companies that we tend to talk about in the news and the areas that are really driving industry, the new reality is that companies are realizing that they win or lose on their people.” Because of this, there’s a new focus on how to help people really thrive at work. Culture is made up of the commonly held beliefs and actions of a business. This also applies to micro levels like units or teams.
That's why you may enter a McDonald's on one side of a highway with friendly service but the others rude. Or the billing division of a company acts less engaged than sales or HR. Or one project team has consistent drama while another sings kumbaya daily.
I believe in this quote from Samuel Goldwyn: "A fish rots from the head down". Leadership creates culture, period.
Culture suffers if a leader allows things to rot. It could be ignoring complaints, shutting down all ideas, aggressive body language, criticizing in public or breaking promises. Think of the countless other leadership actions that hurt business.
A company could have a well-meaning CEO unaware of bad apples spoiling the bunch. You may have unit leaders with zero emotional intelligence killing morale while their CEO is left in the dark.
You could also have a location across the street with great leadership and moral support. Your overall brand will still suffer though due to that bad unit. It happens all the time to franchises and they shut down as a result.
So please keep your eye out for spoiled apples and rotten fish hurting the culture you work so hard on. Dump them immediately!
Working well with others and managing relationships is crucial for career success therefore understanding your self, your emotions and other people and their emotions is a very important skill to acquire. This skill is called emotional intelligence(EI). Research shows that 75 percent of hiring managers in a sample stated that they valued employee’s EQ more than their IQ. .
Employees who are emotionally intelligent are able to communicate well, they see things from other people’s perspectives, they are self-aware, they understand their emotions and are able to manage them, they are able to emphathize with people, they get along with people, they perform well under pressure, and they make better decisions. .
In fact people who are emotionally intelligent are perceived as leaders and better positioned for career advancement therefore it’s a great idea to start honing your EI skills no matter what stage you are in your career. .
Have a great and productive day!

Don’t know what the difference between an employee and a contractor is? We do!⠀
In very simple terms, a contractor is running their own business and an employee works in your business.⠀
The ATO also breaks it down into finer detail. Some of the factors to consider:⠀
> ability of the person to subcontract/delegate the work⠀
> basis of payment - per hour or per job?⠀
> do they use their own tools and equipment or do you supply them?⠀
> who has the commercial risk and control of the work?⠀
> do they operate independent of your business?⠀
Just because someone has an ABN does not necessarily mean they are a legitimate contractor. Want to know more? Go to the link in our bio!!⠀
My workplace shares a building with Uber, aka a scandal-ridden tech company that 'disrupted' the taxi industry by converting secure #jobs into underpaid, precarious #gig contracts. Let's not forget the misogynistic discrimination that helped force the CEO out of the company. Has the company turned a new leaf? We'll see.
Today a bunch of protesters are picketing the office to demand fair pay & treatment for drivers.
The #tech industry likes to sell the #gigeconomy as the future of #work . What this really means is that companies don't have to pay or treat workers as #employees . It's a progressive unwinding of the #benefits that the #labor movement has fought for over the past decades or even centuries. The insult added to injury is that we're told it's for workers' sakes. Ha!
Yes, there are people and circumstances for whom short-term, independent #contracting makes a lot of sense. The French swing the other way by making it too hard to have short-term contracts.
But the fact that these companies *don't* offer proper employment contracts for drivers who want to stay on full-time and long-term tells you it's not actually about what's right for the drivers, it's about the company's bottom line. Make no mistake: the corporation has one true god: dollars. Uber happens to take this religion particularly far.
When you spend your dollars on a business model built on underpaying employees forcing them to seek multiple jobs, consider what you are endorsing and supporting and what hidden cost is being paid by whom. But look I get it, who doesn't value #cheap#convenience ? It's kinda like the Walmart of transportation and comes with remarkably similar costs. Nothing is free, and cheap has a cost.
This is why the solution is through #legislation not expecting people to somehow magically do the right thing.
As technologists we too often destroy everything rather than fix what's broken. That's because it's easier. But of course we know this is #unsustainable which is why we hold our internal work to different standards, iterating and improving to maintain continuity.
Would that we held our #impact on society to the same standard.
