L’impatto visivo è tutt’altro che banale: giallo dorato con bei riflessi ma anche velature che svelano assenza di filtrazioni. Al naso è schietto e senza fronzoli, a dire il vero spaventa anche un po’. La pazienza di saperlo aspettare (3 ore 😫) viene ripagata dalla complessità olfattiva: macchia mediterranea, erbe aromatiche, cappero. E pepe dolce. Che poi non so neanche se esiste il pepe dolce 😄. In bocca ha un sorso ricco e tagliente con note agrumate (cedro e buccia di limone) confermando  la sua natura un po’ ostile e rustica. Un vino che non fa prigionieri, o si ama o si odia.

Drinking very much like a Burgundy indeed! Finesse and restraining capability! I think this wine is just entering its drinking window. Still, Exceptionally Fresh!!! Well, ex-chateau is the key here!! Bottles in the market may not perform as well as this. The restaurant has a really good relationship with Pepe family hence great Pepe list both whites and reds. It changes constantly and relentlessly in glass. Very fruit forward, gamey, earth, tobacco, nutmeg, slight tid bit of touch of pepper. I’m not a big fan of spiciness, because I often find it overriding, but this is at the very best of spiciness! Pyrazine note kinda adds Burgundiness 🤣 anyways this is just a picture of what this wine got,  because it changes so much over the course. Hope everyone finds this exceptional picture too!

Three weeks ago I was privileged to hangout with my friends Melissa and Laurent at Whispering Horse Winery in B.C. We enjoyed an incredible spread of charcuterie and they were so awesome to even have actually delicious gluten free baguettes for me with my recent diagnosis! We enjoyed a couple stunners of course as well. The Ganevat Petnat was mostly still but delicious and the 84 Emidio Pepe was 🔥🔥🔥 I’m still thinking about it three weeks later!! It was fantastic to watch them have such an awesome first year of production and their wines get great reviews. I’m happy to take some of their Pinot Gris home to YYC to share with friends and family. What a pleasure to bump into those two lovely souls the other day! Trust me, happy people make happier wines. And as far as I’m concerned, this is all I wanna drink. Emidio Pepe is the sort of estates we shouldn’t need introducing anymore. Emidio, Chiara’s ‘nonno’, was one of the first, back in the 1960’s, to embrace respectful practices in the vineyard and low intervention winemaking. Till today, most of the cellar work is manually executed (sorry, @cgblewis 😅), and a large portion of the wines is left aging, for years or decades, in the estate’s cellars. Those Montepulciano and Trebbiano are built for eternity indeed, and they travel through the years, always keeping that happy smile on their faces.

ℹ️ Emidio Pepe is a benchmark producer (Edoardo Valentini is the other) in Abruzzo who broke away from local cooperatives to make his own wine. He makes legendary and ageworthy wines from Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Pecorino. One of the key pioneers of Biodynamic Viticulture in Italy. Grapes are hand destemmed and foot trodden. No oak is used, instead he uses glass lined cement vats and then bottle aging. Always unfined, unfiltered, and without SO2·

👁 Medium garnet color with a pale rim (photo taken towards end of bottle which shows sediment)·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of bay leaf, oregano, rare steak, sanguine, red brick, dried strawberry, dried dark cherry, leather, cardamom, and of course VA·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ vibrant acidity, medium- resolved tannins, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Good overall chalky texture to the wine. Medium length finish of sour cherry and earth·

🔔 When I first opened the wine, I thought it was slightly corked. It seemed to blow off after considerable air and was unnoticeable on day 2 (under argon gas). For me that shows that it wasn't TCA. I will add I am fairly sensitive to TCA and rarely consume or finish anything in question. It clearly wasn't in prime condition, but still showed complexity so I decided to score it. I have 1 more bottle that I will open soon to check. I don't have a ton of experience with old Pepe wines, but have heard they are like old Riojas and Barolos that can have a lot of bottle funk and often desperately need air. These wines are legendary, but highly variable in this era especially without SO2.

Non mi dilungo nel descrivervi la straordinarietà della zona di invecchiamento delle bottiglie o della pace in cui lavorano all'interno dell'azienda, o ancor meno del micro clima che permette la nascita di questo vino che troverete a breve sul mio blog, ma vi parlerò di quello che ho assaggiato. Un vino straordinario, elegante, specialmente questo 2010 che racconta nei profumi di frutta matura un terrior evidente, un vino che non conosce botti o barrique, un vino che invecchia semplicemente riposando in bottiglia e proprio questo gli permette di esprimere il massimo dopo una lunga e naturale vita in cantina. Morbido, di grande persistenza e struttura, questo racconta il Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in una delle sue massime estensioni! Emidio Pepe is the sort of estates we shouldn’t need introducing anymore. Emidio, Chiara’s ‘nonno’, was one of the first, back in the 1960’s, to embrace respectful practices in the vineyard and low intervention winemaking. Till today, most of the cellar work is manually executed (sorry, @cgblewis 😅), and a large portion of the wines is left aging, for years or decades, in the estate’s cellars. Those Montepulciano and Trebbiano are built for eternity indeed, and they travel through the years, always keeping that happy smile on their faces.

先月のイタリア研修へ行ったメンバーによる社内セミナーが行われました!
AGIO浦和店金井シェフによる、マンマのお料理教室で学んだアブルッツォ州の郷土料理「オリーブ・アスコラーナ」のレクチャーも。オリーブをらせん状にカットした中に挽肉を詰める&パン粉をつけて揚げた簡単なものですが、ワインにぴったり。薄く焼いたクレープにパルミジャーノチーズを巻き込んで細長く巻いたものをブロード(出汁)でいただくものや、その出汁をとったお肉もガーリックのきいたソースと共においしくいただくような、イタリア流のメニューを一緒に作って試食!貴重なワインもテイスティングして、研修に行っていないスタッフもいろいろと体験できました。
何かの形でお店で提供できるよう、試行錯誤していきますので、お楽しみに!

I go two years without tasting this wine then all of a sudden I get to taste it twice in one week. What? How does this happen? Both of these were awesome wines- somewhere in the confluence of Syrah, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Nerello, and Mourvèdre. Rustic but sleek. Peppery but juicy. Ripe but tensioned. They are next to ageless. I think it was @vinnychaseswine who  I drank it with last, in Aspen I think. Can’t remember what vintage, maybe 83? There are so many great natural wine bars and restaurants in Brooklyn. We happened to stubble upon Have & Meyer after having a very long day of traveling. They took us in feed us delicious food and amazing wine. The service was phenomenal! We started with  @frankcornelissen_winery had some Radikon, then some Pepe trebbiano and finished with a 1970 amaro. It was much needed after a long day. Can’t wait to swing by next time we are in town.

어째서 당신들은 내추럴와인을 만들기로 마음을 먹었느냐, 물었더니 “우리에게 내추럴와인은 유난스런 선택이 아니라 당연한 것”이라며, 자신들은 자신들의 와인을 만드는 포도가 자라는 밭에 살기 때문에, 자기 자신들을 온갖 독소들로 해치고 싶지 않았을 뿐이라고 답하더군요. 그야말로 <와인이 곧 삶>인 사람들이 만들 수 있는 것이 내추럴와인이라는 것을 새삼 또, 깨달았습니다.

Two amazing bottles of wine today @trullo_restaurant with @wjtrotman. The legendary Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from @emidiopepe made the same way it would have been made 💯 years ago using biodynamics. Hand picked and hand de-stemmed and foot stomped in ancient wooden vessels, straight into glass lined cement tanks fermentation and maturation with no sulphur added. An amazing complex wine with off the chain salinity and minerality a wine that will age for years. Partnered perfectly with Tagliarini with Dorset crab, chilli and lemon 🍋. The pithy citrus fruit in the wine matching perfectly with the lemon and crab 🦀. Oh and the Hermitage was ace too! *
