I found @camdenhoch last week. The Author of Roadmap To Radiance, she is also a Life coach, inspirational speaker, mother, wife, and poet. So far I've only listened to two episodes of her podcast Truth & Dare but I really enjoyed them both. Check her out if finding balance, listening to your truth and following your heart resonates with you.
“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.”
——————————————————————————— Martin Luther King had accomplished so much in his life already after having been a voice for so many people. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The biggest accomplishment that would change the course of history was again in in 1964 and 1965. Congress passed a law that deemed racial discrimination illegal in 1964. However, lasting change would not come till later. MLK led the Selma March to Montgomery in support of better voting rights for African Americans. This event helped lead Congress to eliminate the remaining voting obstacles that African Americans faced in 1965. Martin Luther King Jr. had received many awards for his brave efforts during the Civil Rights Movement. The greatest award he could ever receive was the passage of these two bills that brought him closer to seeing a world where everyone is considered equal.
“Often referred to as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement”
——————————————————————————— This form of gendered phrasing provides a nurturing and moral image of Rosa Parks. While Rosa was not a mother herself, old world views of women illustrated females as moral and uncorrupted by the public sphere. When Rosa was forcibly removed from the bus, this was viewed as an act against not only African Americans but also women as well. This was a major turning point for the African American community. Her actions gave the NAACP the opportunity to fight against segregation. She has since been recognized for her achievements and has received multiple awards. Two that she has been the recipient of includes: NAACP’s Spingarn Medal and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Parks story lives on. History taught in schools might narrow down Parks’ efforts to simply not giving up her seat. The truth however, is that she was a political mastermind. She learned effective forms of protest from fellow activists. Her actions in 1955 were calculated events that history chooses to ignore because she was a woman. She was always at the important events. She sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She influenced many to join the Civil Rights Movement. She inspired and continues to inspire future generations to become activists and effect change for the betterment of our society.
“He had a dream - a dream that all men be free, that the dignity of each and every man be cherished.” ———————————————————————————
I will not deny that Martin Luther King Jr. was an inspiring leader, or that his actions did not lead to some great changes in the United States. But I will say that history has gendered his actions. There has consistently been a focus on helping the male gender in any way possible. In this quote there is no mention of women. There is no true drive for female equality that Martin Luther King Jr. tries to implement. In situations where there are male leaders who have the opportunity to effect change, it is important for them to help those who cannot speak for themselves. It is important for women’s issues to not go undiscussed. When a man like MLK has so much power to help express challenges that women, especially black women, encounter it is up to that person to shed light on the injustices against women.
I can balance my Christmas tree on one finger. Can’t you? 🤷♀️☺️ Seriously, though. Let’s stop comparing ourselves to our friend, neighbor, colleague, enemy. You’re not her. You are you. Beautifully created to do great things. 💕 You’re more equipped, you’re stronger, and you have more skills than you may realize. Let’s stop telling ourselves we can’t do it and start believing that we CAN! Today I’m going to do all the things I need to get done, and I’ll do them well. I am equipped for this! You are, too. Can we do this together?
Today, I was humbly reminded of why I am pursuing a career in nursing. A good friend of mine and nursing student, Jenny, and I took the initiative to volunteer at a local church in Chico for anyone who was displaced from the Camp Creek Fire. Nurses, NPs, chiropractors, pre-med students, and volunteers in general from all over the state of California took it upon themselves to treat patients and tend to the sick, pregnant and elderly due to a slow response from state and county officials.
Despite the palpable sense of loss, it was truly amazing to witness local members of a community play a significant role in recovery efforts and display remarkable skills of self-organization.
The response from everyday people has not only reaffirmed my faith in my surrounding communities, but also solidifies my decision to join a field that exudes compassion, embraces change, and welcomes advocacy.
Always remember that volunteering- no matter how small the act- can have a profound and lasting effect on many lives.
The Innovation and Scaling for Social Enterprise seminar and panel run by #ANU was an eye opener.
With representatives from #Denmark , #Kenya , #Italy and #Chile - there was a lot to learn about what social enterprises can do for the world, and the differences and challenges they face in different environments and countries.
But the take away is that every small effort counts.
Todays inspiration comes from the wall of quotes at my local #orangetheoryfitness . It speaks to me every time I am on that damn treadmill, (which I hate, almost as much as I hate the rower. 😆) But I love this quote because when I look at it, I think about how pushing myself actually effects change in others. When you improve yourself (in any area of life) you improve your family, your relationships, your tribe... it’s the ripple effect. By working on becoming the best version of ourselves (I am not just talking fitness) we inspire and motivate others to do the same. So when I see this quote, it forces me to think of all the people I would let down if I quit. I feel like I am literally RUNNING for my team, my family, and all our LIVES. Don’t kid yourself by thinking you don’t matter... you MATTER A LOT. People are watching you... what are you going to do, TODAY, to be the best YOU you’ve ever been? .

HABITS - the good, the bad, the ugly!
🧚♀️ We are creatures of habit. Some habits are great, others not so much. Habits, good or bad, begin to define our level of success. Success in any capacity -
🧚♀️health and wellness
all habit related… drink too much, health and wellness may be affected, exercise three to four times per week, well, we all know the benefits of that habit!
🧚♀️I have been thinking about the habits I have and whether or not they serve me in where I wish to be in various levels of life. Some are great, others I need to work on. For example, I'd love to be in the habit of waking much earlier and accomplishing some things before I go to work - this is a work in progress as I have never found mornings to be my forte. I do however, listen to or read something inspirational pretty much each day - this is a mindset booster and I love this habit! 👍
🧚♀️ It's good to clean our own windows so to speak and observe which habits serve us and which don't and then… CHANGE the ones that don't.
Ooooh, the C word!! _
CHANGE for improvement??!! Now really, how can we deny ourselves that?!
Before you eat all the 🦃 I know you’re making your Black Friday shopping plans!! Be sure to add a stop at Spezia Sioux Falls to grab yourself a mimosa 🍹 and a snack! You’ll probably need it!
Fun door prizes and drawings every hour! Our Second Annual Black Friday will not disappoint!!
The gun violence epidemic in our country has got to stop, and it’s not going to fix itself. The research is there, there are ways to curb this violence. It’s been successfully done in many other countries, but not by thinking and praying for a magical answer while doing nothing else. Sometimes it feels like, as individuals, there’s not much we can do to effect change, but one thing we know is design, so we’re using our skills to do what we can, no matter how small. We created this Tots & Pears pin to illustrate how frustrated we are with empty thoughts and prayers from politicians in the wake of daily gun violence in America. We’re donating $5 of every sale to @everytown, a great organization working for gun safety in America. Thoughts and prayers are a wonderful gesture, but they don’t stop bullets. We need policy and change to do that. Our hope is that our little Tots & Pears pin can help to build safer communities in some small but concrete way. 🥔🍐
